The Banshees traces the feminist contributions of a wide range of Irish American women writers, from Mother Jones, Kate Chopin, and Margaret Mitchell to contemporary authors such as Gillian Flynn, Jennifer Egan, and Doris Kearns Goodwin. To illustrate the growth and significance of their writing, the book is organized chronologically by decade. Each chapter details the progress and setbacks of Irish American women during that period by examining key themes in their novels and memoirs contextualized within a discussion of contemporary feminism, Catholicism, Irish American history, American politics, and society. The Banshees examines these writers’ roles in protecting women’s sovereignty, rights, and reputations. Thanks to their efforts, feminism is revealed as a fundamental element of Irish American literary history.

Review
This insightful volume will appeal to students of Irish literature, feminism, and 20th-century American sociopolitical history. --Library Journal

The Banshees is both a celebration of the work of the Irish American Women Writers we know and a recovery of the work of the many talented writers whose work is either less well-known or has been lost. Sally Barr Ebest s study is ambitious, timely and detailed, and is a most erudite, passionate, and persuasive study of Irish American Women Writers from 1900 to the present. --Eamonn Wall author of From the Sin-e Cade to the Black Hills: Notes on the New Irish

The Banshees will undoubtedly resonate with the women who are reading and writing in the twenty-first century. It will be intriguing to watch how Irish-American women receive it, and how they use it to make and remake themselves. --New Hibernia Review

Disclaimer: I was assigned this book for a class, incidentally with the professor who wrote this book. I don't HAVE to give it a review at all, but I want to because this book gives a solid overview of topics that readers may not realize are related. The historical, chronological organization of this book makes the most sense, as Ebest moves forward through American history giving insight into the context for literature of each decade. While you may not think that Irish American women writers would be distinct enough to warrant their own study--you would be very wrong indeed. This literary history ties together literature and social context, providing new angles on gender roles, social expectations, feminist activism, literary criticism. and human experience. If you are looking for a corner of literature that is not yet well-represented and studied, I recommend picking up this book to start with Irish American women writers.

From Booklist
Readers will be surprised to find the strong feminist ideals evoked in this collection of essays written by sisters belonging to the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a Catholic institution that many would consider to be far from feminist. Many of the articles address traditional feminist concerns, such as power and economic freedom, while also emphasizing the individual strength and collective power of this tight-knit group. The sisters' stories also trace the history of the order, providing a window into their mysterious, secretive, contemplative lives and examining their relationships with one another, with other orders, and with the hierarchy of the church. Margaret Susan Thompson, a scholar on Catholic female religious orders, provides detailed information for those unfamiliar with the lifestyles, roles, and experiences of Catholic sisters. General readers and those concerned with Catholic religious orders or women's studies will find this well-written and straightforward work of interest. Kathleen Hughes

A book well worth reading
By Yvonne Kasper
I am not finished reading this book yet, however, if you are interested in how and why an organization like this is formed and the daily workings of such an organization this is the book for you. You can see and feel the love this group of women had for our lord and savior. The courage that these women must of had and the hardships they must have endoured is truly amazing. I have always felt it takes a very special kind of women to be a religious today; let alone in this time frame now I know it does. I wanted to learn more about this specific group of women and this book is certainly telling me that information. I can't wait to get back into the book and read some more. This book will also help you understand yourself better and help you to become a better person.

The Urban Colonists: Italian American Identity and Pol in Utica NY, by Philip Bean

In 1910, nearly half of Italian immigrants in the United States lived in communities with fewer than 100,000 residents.  These immigrants often developed surprisingly complex ethnic "colonies" like those that existed in larger cities, and many attained prominence in the political, social, and commercial life of such smaller cities and towns. It is this class of community, often neglected by scholars whose attention is drawn to larger metropolitan areas, that Bean explores in The Urban Colonists, a richly detailed history of Italian Americans in Utica, New York.  Charting the rise and decline of Utica's "colonia" from the mid-nineteenth century into the late twentieth century, Bean examines the multiple facets of life in this ethnic enclave, including the settlement of new neighborhoods, labor unions and left-wing activists, its lively business community, ethnic and political organizations, the complexity and broader relevance of immigrant religiosity, and powerful "Old World" hometown loyalties.  He discusses how an array of factors, including social and political upheaval and discrimination, fostered the rise of Italian nationalism and Italian American identity.  The author deftly illustrates how this intensified ethnic identity, the high concentration of Italians in Utica, and a quest for respect and economic security helped to make Italian American leaders important local political power brokers for much of the twentieth century.

Review
"Bean's carefully-researched and engaging account highlights an overlooked dimension of Italian-American history: the experience in mid-sized cities. His volume on Utica offers a compelling study of the construction of a more unitary Italian self-perception among immigrants who initially failed to think of themselves as part of the same national minority. Bean's thought-provoking emphasis on the membership in the Democratic Party as a pivotal means of empowerment and a key expression of community identity will aptly dispel stereotypical interpretations of Italian Americans' amoral familism."- Stefano Luconi, University of Padua, Italy --Stefano Luconi, University of Padua, Italy

"A well-researched and accessible history of the advent and decline of the Italian immigrant settlement in Utica, New York. Bean thoroughly covers the rise of Italians in politics, the fall of labor unions, and the building of a community through immigrant fear, early citizenship, and loyal defense of democracy in times of war and peace. This information will be a welcomed addition to the field of Italian American radical history." Fred Gardaphe- Distinguished Professor of Italian American Studies, Queens College/CUNY --Fred Gardaphe- Distinguished Professor of Italian American Studies, Queens College/CUNY

A major contribution to the field of Italian American History as well as local history, ethnic and interethnic studies, urban history , and the evolution of conflicting forces of ethnic maintenance versus assimilation."-Frank J. Cavaioli, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, Farmingdale State, SUNY, former President of the American Italian Historical Association. --Frank J. Cavaioli, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, Farmingdale State, SUNY, former President of the American Italian Historical Association.

"Philip Bean has produced not only the definitive work on Italians in Utica, but a masterful piece of scholarship that anyone interested in the history of Italian immigration to America should read. By concentrating on the experience in a smaller city, The Urban Colonists sheds light on an aspect of the immigrant experience that is often overlooked. Through fine detail the story of Utica's Italian-American community shines through, and with it the similarities and differences between the story of immigrants in large cities and those living in smaller communities. A must read for all students of upstate New York." - Alexander R. Thomas, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Sociology, SUNY College at Oneonta --Alexander R. Thomas, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Sociology, SUNY College at Oneonta

"Philip A. Bean's The Urban Colonists: Italian American Identity and Politics in Utica, New York is more than the story of Italian Americans in a town in upstate New York. It accomplishes what virtually every other "case study" on Italian Americans and politics has failed to do. By telling the story of Italian Americans in Utica, it tells the wider story of Italian Americans as a major ethnic group in the United States, thus providing a significant contribution to the history of the country as a whole." --Italian American Review Journal

Bean has earned degrees from Union College, Oxford University, and the University of Rochester and has published articles on immigration and New York State political history in a number of scholarly journals. Excellent historical tome
By NickL
This volume is a very accurate documentation of Italian migration, to Utica, N.Y., and the surrounding areas.
It is not as much a book that one would read for pleasure, as its' format is closer to that of a college textbook.
If you are searching for chronological facts and figures, this is the book for you.
If you are looking for a colorful and entertaining book, filled with photos, Italian customs and anecdotes, this is not the one.
If you are writing a paper on the subject, however, this book will prove to be an indispensable reference.

Resistance, Repression, and Gender Politics in Occupied Palestine and Jordan (Gender, Culture, and Politics in the Middle East), by France

This book focuses on the central party apparatus of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), the Democratic Front (DF) branches established in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Jordan in the 1970s, and the most influential and innovative of the DF women's organizations: the Palestinian Federation of Women's Action Committees in the occupied territories. Until now, no study of a Palestinian political organization has so thoroughly engaged with internal gender histories. In addition, no other work attempts to systematically compare branches in different regional locations to explain those differences.

Students of gender and Middle East studies, especially those with a specialty in Palestinian studies, will find this work to be of critical importance. This book will also be of great interest to those working on political protest movements and factional ties.

Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup, by Andrew Zimbalist

Author Andrew Zimbalist looks beyond the headlines of two of the world’s most beloved sporting events: the Olympics and the World Cup.

In the expanded and updated edition of his bestselling book, Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup, Zimbalist tackles the bogus claim that the cities chosen to host these high-profile sporting events experience an economic windfall. He now takes aim at the outrageous FIFA scandal, Boston’s bid for the 2024 summer Olympics, and the criticism surrounding the 2015 Women's World Cup.

Circus Maximus focuses on major cities like London and Barcelona that have previously hosted these sporting events to provide context for cities like Tokyo and Rio de Janerio, which are currently bearing the weight of exploding expenses, corruption, and protests. Zimbalist offers a sobering look at the Olympics and the World Cup outside of the echo chamber.

Review
Even appropriately jaded readers are likely to be shocked by the evidence ...which reveals the magnitude of the deception that precedes these events and the disappointment that follows.”—The Economist

A remarkable study that exposes the extraordinary chicanery and dodgy dealing behind staging the Olympics and the World Cup
—The Guardian

Anyone in our broad metropolitan region who worries about the development binge that treats our unique area as a mega-mall for paving over, or who worries about the corrupting influence that commercialization has brought to all amateur sports should read this book.
—The Washington Times

A slim yet persuasive book that seeks to set out the "economic gamble behind hosting the Olympics and the World Cup." And it succeeds; indeed, it succeeds to such an extent that the reader can't help but wonder why on earth any vaguely sensible city or country would want to play any part in such an expensive business.
—SB Nation

“Circus Maximus’’ ought to be required reading for the city and state officials anxious to bring the Olympics to Boston.
—The Boston Globe

Pssst. Wanna buy a velodrome cheap? Andrew Zimbalist's penetrating examination of how the International Olympic Committee and FIFA have sweet-talked cities and nations into hosting their extravaganzas is absolutely devastating in its ugly detail.—Frank Deford, Author and Commentator

Sport analytics freaks and millennial's unite! Not to mention lovers of the Olympics and the World Cup. This is a book you will want to read in one sitting. And, speaking of relevance, you can learn major ideas from principles of micro and macroeconomics by reading this book. Anyone who wants to teach these subjects can use "Circus Maximus" alongside any textbook there by teaching very hot applications and making the experience more fun!
—Deborah A. Freund, PhD, Paul O'Neill-Alcoa Chair in Policy Analysis Senior Principal Researcher

Fantastic book about the troubling economics of the Olympic Games
By RVO
This is an extremely well written book that relentlessly and completely gives the lie to the oft-spoken idea that large sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup are economic gold mines for host cities or countries. Simply put, they aren't. But it's worse than that. Andrew Zimbalist uses facts, pertinent economic explanations, humor and irony to explain how host cities are nearly all left with economic disasters after the Olympics and World Cup leave town, taking most of the financial gain with them. The book showcases the sometimes insane euphoria, and big cash, that goes into bidding for world class sporting events with promises of increased tourism during the games that extends after the games, increased cache and economic preimenance that go along with hosting such events.

Zimbalist does a fantastic job of explaining that the Olympic Games don't even bring more tourists to a city while they are happening, let alone for years afterward. London actually had fewer tourists in the Summer of 2012. As for the supposed cache attached to host cities, this book explains it can all go bad if there is a terrorist attack, protests, or, as in Brazil, deaths associated with the construction of venues.

And the book showcases how the 'legacy' of hosting these events can often turn into a public relations nightmare when, like Athens and Beijing there are rotting stadiums that scar the landscape, or, like Sochi, you leave an impression of an infrastructure mess.

And for those cities who eagerly jump at the chance for a bid, they often cite the 1984 Olympic Games in LA (which turned a modest profit) and the 1992 Barcelona Games, (which excellerated that city's rise as a city of consequence), Zimbalist clearly why those two cities are singular events, not easily reproduced.

I love the Olympics. This book tells another side of the story beyond the athletic drama of the games. After reading this book, I hope my city never even bids for an Olympics.

Required Reading For Those Who Want to Understand the Impact of Sporting Mega-Event on Host Communities
By Christopher Dempsey
Professor Zimbalist has written a concise, straightforward analysis and commentary on the tradeoffs of bidding for and hosting sporting mega-events such as the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. The book addresses examples from Barcelona (which seems to have benefited from the Games) to Sochi (an ego-driven waste of resources) to London, where the benefits of the Games have not met boosters' claims.

With a mix of interesting anecdotes, references to the work of fellow academics, and independent research, Zimbalist has made an accessible, informative, and important contribution to the public debate.

Questioning the wisdom of your city pursuing an Olympic bid, or your nation bidding on the World Cup? Wondering how the IOC or FIFA decide on a host? This book is a must read.

Exposes Major Sports Extravanganza Boondoggles
By Loyd Eskildson
The modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896, and bear little resemblance to either the ancient Greek games two millennia ago or today's games (women were excluded, amateurism was required, and expenditures/preparations were far less extensive).

China spent $40 billion hosting the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Russia spent $50 billion for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, London 2012 spent close $20 billion (brought in $5.2 billion in revenues), Brazil spent about $20 billion for the 2014 World Cup (much of it never finished; the expenditures provoked riots in protest) and another $20 billion on the 2016 Olympics, and Qatar is estimating it will spend $200 billion to host the 2022 World Cup. Lingering allegations of corruption also tarnish the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar World Cups; hotel gift bags in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup included luxury watches worth $25,000 (later returned after exposed). These major sporting events are marketed to cities and taxpayers as major economic boons, and competition is fierce to host them. But are they worth it? That is the question author Zimbalist seeks to answer.

The average cost overrun for staging the Olympics has been 200% since 1976. London's organizers initially said the Games would cost $4 billion - the final bill came out to $15 - 20 billion. Bids by cities are driven by construction companies and unions, insurance and architecture companies, hotels, local media, investment bankers, public relations groups, and lawyers working for those groups.

Potential bidding cities are told that the Olympics will boost tourism. Atlanta, however, saw no statistically significant change in retail sales, hotel occupancy, or airport traffic during the 1996 Olympics. Beijing and London experienced a decrease in international tourism during their host month and year. As for long-term effect - the European Tour Operators Association contends that hosting the Olympics does not boost, and may even reduce, future tourism. That is because the best way to promote tourism is word-of-mouth when travelers return home - Olympic tourists, however, return home and talk of watching various competition. To the extent that Olympic tourists replace traditional tourists, the positive advertising effect is diminished.

THE IOC has appropriated an ever-increasing share of proceeds for itself - now over 70% of Olympic television revenue, compared with less than 4% between 1960 and 1980.

Costly stadiums produce minimal long-term economic benefits - that is why they're usually built by taxpayers rather than corporations. After the 17-day Olympic party is over, experience has shown that host cities can expect facilities to be underutilized, cost millions/year to maintain, and occupy 5 - 30 acres each of valuable urban real estate. They become white elephants. In Athens, a volleyball stadium is now inhabited by squatters and a softball park overgrown with trees; Beijing has a week-infested cycling racetrack, Brazil a soccer stadium with 40,000 seats is now used by a team drawing about 1,500 fans each game, Calgary now has a ski-jump directly in front of a since-erected McDonald's, and tourists can ride Segways around Beijing's Bird's Nest..

The number of bidders for the Winter Olympics has fallen from nine in 1995 for the 2002 Games in SLC to two in 2014 for the 2022 Games. The Summer Olympics has decreased from 12 in 1997 for the 2004 Games in Athens to three in 2013 for the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Mexico City (violence and political protest), Munich (eleven Israeli athletes killed by terrorists), and Montreal (its 1976 games cost 9.2X what had been budged and the debt took 30 years to pay off) were commercially unsuccessful Olympics. Thus, Los Angeles 1984 was the only bidder and officials told the IOC it would only host if the IOC guaranteed against losses. L.A. used existing sports infrastructure from the 1932 Olympics plus a few smaller, privately-funded venues, and Peter Ueberroth, head of the organizing committee also introduced a corporate sponsorship model to help cover operating expenses. L.A. 1984 became an exception, profiting $215 million.

Barcelona 1992 was another exception. That city had developed a renovation plan prior to hosting the Olympics, and the Olympics were fit into the plan, contrary to the typical sequence.

Statehouse and Greenhouse: The Emerging Politics of American Climate Change Policy, by Barry G. Rabe

No environmental issue triggers such feelings of hopelessness as global climate change. Many areas of the world, including regions of the United States, have experienced a wide range of unusually dramatic weather events recently. Much climate change analysis forecasts horrors of biblical proportions, such as massive floods, habitat loss, species loss, and epidemics related to warmer weather. Such accounts of impending disaster have helped trigger extreme reactions, wherein some observers simply dismiss global climate change as, at the very worst, a minor inconvenience requiring modest adaptation. It is perhaps no surprise, therefore, that an American federal government known for institutional gridlock has accomplished virtually nothing in this area in the last decade. Policy inertia is not the story of this book, however. Statehouse and Greenhouse examines the surprising evolution of state-level government policies on global climate change. Environmental policy analyst Barry Rabe details a diverse set of innovative cases, offering detailed analysis of state-level policies designed to combat global warming. The book explains why state innovation in global climate change has been relatively vigorous and why it has drawn so little attention thus far. Rabe draws larger potential lessons from this recent flurry of American experience. Review

"The burgeoning literature on environmental federalism has a strong new book to add to its ranks. Rabe's STATEHOUSE AND GREENHOUSE offers an engaging look at the development of climate change policy at the subnational level in the U.S.... Highly recommended." —M.C. Stephan, Washington State University, Choice, 11/1/2004

"This well volume by a professor of environmental policy is an essential book for students of environmental and energy policy." — Educational Book Review, 9/1/2004

"make[s] important contributions to the growing literature on comparative environmental policy....Rabe has written an analytically insightful and approachable book that serves various audiences. It has lessons for those concerned with the robustness and fundamental nature of American federalism and bottom-up policymaking" —Daniel Mazmanian, Publius, 9/22/2006

From the Inside Flap

Statehouse and Greenhouse helps to move debate over global climate change from bombast to the realm of what is politically and technically feasible.

Well presented given complex topic
By Martha G.
I'm a graduate student in environmental studies and wanted a summer book giving some historical context to state level Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards. Barry Rabe does a great job of revealing how the states emerged as the most powerful force in climate change regulations. This isn't a book focused on climate change per se, it's a primer on how the states have reacted to climate change, political forces, and economic volatility to craft effective legislation. While it is a fact-filled book (at times a little too dense) his writing style flows well. It was an enjoyable read while reinforcing the important influence to remember. I'm looking forward to reading his 2010 book. Although this book could be looked at as being dated (2004), it very valuable from the historical as well as legislative effectiveness perspective.
