Over the last decade, there has been an increasing number of middleand
upper-class urban Pakistani women actively turning toward Islam
via Al-Huda, an Islamic school for women aiming to transform the
women who absorb its message into "pious" subjects. Established in the
early 1990s, Al-Huda is unique in its ability to attract a following among
these women, a feat other religious groups have been unsuccessful in
accomplishing.
In Transforming Faith, Sadaf Ahmad deftly explores how Al-Huda is
fostering a new generation of educated, urban, middle-class women to
become veiled conservatives. She offers an engrossing and sensitive account
of how the school's aggressive recruiting methods through informal
religious study groups and a one-year degree program combined with the
school's techniques of persuasive teaching methods have turned Al-Huda
into a social movement. As a woman of Pakistani origin, Ahmad offers
an in-depth look at the students and members of Al-Huda in ways that a
cultural outsider would be excluded from doing. She reveals that although
Pakistani women are better educated than ever before they still face social
barriers that limit them from working or pursuing further education.
Ahmad's groundbreaking work demonstrates Al-Huda's ever-widening
teachings and influence in Pakistan and in its recent global extensions.
More broadly, this book illuminates how Al-Huda uses the trappings of
modernity to engage educated women in a kind of religious study that
transforms their ideology, behavior, and lifestyle within a particular Islamic
framework. Because of Al-Huda's teachings, Pakistani society is changing,
as is the rest of the Muslim world.

R. Michael Alvarez is professor of political science at the California Institute of Technology and codirector of the Caltech-MIT Voting Technology Project. His books include Hard Choices, Easy Answers: Values, Information, and American Public Opinion, written with John Brehm (Princeton, 2002). He is a nationally recognized expert on voting behavior and elections. Thad E. Hall is assistant professor of political science and a research fellow in the Institute of Public and International Affairs at the University of Utah.

A useful book about an interesting idea

In this book, R. Michael Alvarez discusses the possibility of Internet voting. And we see a number of ways in which the Internet might improve elections. It could greatly simplify absentee voting (for example, for military personnel overseas, or college students, or those who have recently changed addresses, or frequent travelers). It could make vote counting easier, and I think it could make instant runoff voting easier as well. It could be used as part of a system to allow folks to vote at the same time that they register. There are plenty of ways in which it could improve voter turnout. Internet voting could also reduce (if not eliminate) problems with "overvotes" and "undervotes."

On the other hand, there is a serious question about the equal access of citizens to voting booths. Not everyone has equal access to the Internet. Worse, Internet voting could make the risk of fraud even more serious. Large numbers of votes might be stolen. As Alvarez explains, perhaps the most obvious threat is "spoofing," where bogus websites and messages could be used to trick voters into casting votes on a bogus site, after which, given their logins, the people at that site might be able to log in as those voters and cast plenty of votes for real.

Yes, one idea to help reduce fraud is to make sure that voters know whom (and what) they have voted for, as well as if anyone has changed their vote (or complained about their purported vote being fraudulent). But I think that also increases the risk of one's vote no longer being secret.

Should we citizens vote in this manner? Maybe we should. In any case, I think that whether we do so or not, we need to have far more safeguards on our votes.

Disappointing

This book can really be divided into two parts. The first part of the book provides reprints of some of the key court decisions in the legal battle that transpired after the Presidential election in 2000. While volumes were said and written about these decisions, most Americans did not read the actual decisions themselves. I did read the U.S. Supreme Court decision of December 12th, which effectively ended the legal confrontation, when it was released and was surprised by the way it was portrayed by the press. To my reading, neither side reported it completely accurately. Other key decisions (including two by the Florida Supreme Court) are included conveniently in this one text without the distraction of the 'spin doctors' to tell you what you should be thinking. As a non-lawyer, I found the decisions to be quite readable and within my grasp.
The second part of the book is two collections of editorials, one set chosen by a Pro-Bush advocate and one set chosen by a Pro-Gore advocate. These make for very light reading and this comes as a bit of a relief. After wading through a 60 plus page decision from the Supreme Court, it's a nice change of pace to read some light "op-ed" columns from prominent national newspapers. However, these are relatively unimportant. Does anyone still care what The Washington Post thought about the election on November 21st? I was struck by how inflammatory the rhetoric was in these editorials. This was true on both sides. I'm not sure the country was well served by the press and I'm also not impressed that these sources are particularly important now.
Conspicuously lacking are the plaintiff's briefs, which are really the core first person materials. While you can surmise the logic of the arguments of each side to some extent from the reply of the court, it would have been interesting to have these materials here.
If you are looking for a single source collection of the some of the court decisions in the disputed election, then you may find this reference useful. If you are looking for insight and perspective into what was certainly an historic time for our country (as I was when I purchased this book), this book falls short. Perhaps, it is just too soon to expect this from a book. While we all know what happened, it will probably be some time before we fully understand what it means.

You can stop after the first half

The only reason this book has any value is because of the opinions from the courts that take up the first half of the volume. The rest of the book is filled with op-ed pieces from various newspapers and magazines, liberal and conservative. They are all pretty much worthless. They are too short to offer any real insight, and instead simply seek to use very abrasive rhetoric to whip their respective troops into a frenzy. Reading the court cases however, is clearly an essential part of understanding what happened in the election of 2000. To me, it is fairly clear that what happened to Gore was blatently undemocratic and unfair, but also completely legal under Florida's statutory scheme. So the fundamental question that the book raises, though it never directly address it, is, should we be pursuing a basic sense of fairness, or strictly adhereing to laws, even when it is apparent that they are not functioning in a democratic way, or to the benefit of the citizenry whatsoever. If you think that op-ed columnists will adequately answer that, think again. But at least this book allows thoughtful readers who want to ponder the question for themselves the opportunity to see some source materials.

In this book, Weingrad presents a counter-history of American Jewish culture, one that tells the story of literature written by a group whose core identity was neither American nor Jewish American. These writers were ardently and nationalistically Jewish and, despite their adopting a new country, their linguistic and cultural allegiance was to the Hebrew language. Producing poetry, short fiction, novels, essays, and journals, writers such as Mordecai Manuel Noah, Shimon Halkin, and Gabriel Preil sought to express a Jewish cultural nationalism through literature.
Weingrad explores Hebrew literature in the United States from the emergence of a group of writers connected with the Hebraist movement in the early twentieth century to the present. Radically expanding and challenging our conceptions of American and Jewish identities in literature, the author offers wide-ranging cultural analysis and thoughtful readings of key works. Michael Weingrads excellent and enthusiastic study introduces the reader to American Hebrew literature: a little-known element of twentieth century American Jewish culture that was neither American nor American Jewish in its identity. Weingrad was attracted to this un-American Jewish tale not only because this noteworthy body of literature is one of the best kept secrets of Jewish American Cultural History, but precisely because it stands in contrast to the success story of Jewish immigration and assimilation in the United States.
These largely unsung Hebrew writers hailed from well-educated backgrounds in Eastern Europe and brought with them to America a strong allegiance to the Hebrew language and Jewish nationalism. Their literary output reveals how they rejected the mainstream culture and exposes their scornful attitudes towards their fellow American Jews who they castigated for ignorance of Judaism, materialism and coarseness and assimilatory values. At the same time, however, these ardent Jewish nationalists had to fight for recognition of their art, particularly from their rather dismissive Israeli counterparts.

Rejecting urban America, New York in particular, American Hebrew writers often turned their literary attention to rural America and to an idealized Native American past. The search for an authentic American subject for their art engendered a curious trend towards writing epic poems about American Indians, modeled on Longfellow s Hiawatha. Yet such a marginalized counter culture could not continue to survive, and it died out after most of the writers moved to Israel.

They lived in America and wrote in Hebrew. They never came close to achieving the numbers or the cultural impact of their Yiddish counterparts, and you might be tempted to dismiss them as a footnote in the vast and varied archives of twentieth-century literature.

Why did they do it? A hundred years ago, Hebrew was nobody's mother tongue; it was a language still being re-invented. Classical Hebrew education still held sway in the Old World, but America, for literate Jews, was a place of banishment. To write in Hebrew in America, then, was to be a minority within a minority. No normal person would write modern literature in a dead language, for an audience that did not exist.

But these weren't normal guys.

They were people who lived halfway in a world of dreams. Take Shimon Ginzburg (1890-1944). We have from him three long poems about America: "In the Tower" (1912), "On the Temple Mount of Colombia" (1916), and "No-York" (1917). Through a succession of dreams, visions, and nightmares, he gives us America as he sees it. These visions interpenetrate with the concrete world: a museum intrudes in a vision of an edenic Zion; a dream-ship carries immigrants to the rebuilt Jewish nation, and that nation's thanks are returned to the American president; an enormous city ruled by Moloch is overthrown in a "messianic conquest".

Their relationship with modernity was strained and paradoxical; the American Hebrew poets tended to be more conservative in style (p. 30) than the European Hebraists. The last thing Shimon Halkin (1899-1987) wanted to write poetry about was "this mediocre country with its commonplace reality" (p. 34), so he resorted to a "literary schizophrenia" or "double bookkeeping" (p. 36), writing his poetry in an elevated style while his novel 'Yehiel ha-hegri' was "one of the first modernist novels in Hebrew".

They were not immune to the lure of "Going Native" (ch. 3), but they took the 'Hiawatha' tradition in a different direction. Benjamin Nahum Silkiner ("painfully shy" and a polymath) published the 1500+ lines of "Before the Tent of Timura" in 1910. I won't spoil Weingrad's summary (pp. 81-94) of this remarkable poem - you'll have to get the book to read it for yourself - but it's the voice of "a young Jewish poet who had crossed half the world, trying to find a refuge for his people and their traditions" (p. 94). More precisely, Weingrad explains, "What so many of his contemporaries judged as an exploration of aboriginal America was a chronicle of his own soul."

By the time the tri-lingual writer Harry Sackler published "The Flight to Eureka", the final novel of the trilogy "Beween Earth and Heaven", in 1964, American Jews had had many years to reflect on the relationship between their identities as Jews and as Americans. The character of Avner personifies this struggle, and his "exile" to the small town of Eureka encapsulates the temptations and the dangers of this struggle between old and new. But the American Hebrew novels of this period, Weingrad observes, "filled an inescapably memorial function". The gap between American and Jewish national identity, it seemed, would prove unbridgeable.

Gabriel Preil (1911-1993) was one of "the last Mohicans" (ch. 7). His 1954 poem "Waiting for the Atomic Tomorrow" (pp. 229-230) is, "above all, a prophetic elegy for American Hebrew literature", Weingrad explains. The poet perceives the gradual but inexorable extinction of his world - read: American Hebrew literature - and anticipates a future, alien scholar or historian analyzing the remains.

But isn't that what all literature is? A collection of seed-letters etched in the unliving page or stone? A desperate message in a bottle, a time capsule left for future generations? Dead words that will one day be given life again?

Such thoughts might have been in the mind of Robert Whitehill (b. 1947), the North Carolina -born, Texas-raised, self-taught Hebrew poet. His story is remarkable and I won't spoil it for you here - again, get the book! But think about this: Here's someone who learned Hebrew from a Berlitz self-study course and an Israeli Arab roommate, now writing and publishing in Hebrew.

Like I said, they're not normal people.

So who were they writing for, these mad scribblers in an ancient language? They were writing for the future. They were writing for us.
