Written by Delhi University (India) political science teacher Navnita Chadha Behera, Demystifying Kashmir is a close examination of the contested Kashmir territory, which has been a source of dispute and outright war between Indian and Pakistan for practically half a century. Yet Kashmir has its own ethnic, cultural, religious, and political history. Drawn from extensive field research, Demystifying Kashmir examines the conflict over Kashmir in the context of a political battle of statemaking between India and Pakistan, rather that an ideological Hindu-Muslim conflict. Chapters examine the medley of races caught in the midst of strife, the doomed Kashmiri insurgency of 1989 (initially an indigenous and underground movement of young people calling themselves the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front prior to developing into a mass movement for independence), and the modern day "peace puzzle" that focuses on what Behera refers to as the four P's: the parameters, players, policies, and prognosis of the peace process in Kashmir. Conflicted sources, not conflicted Estonians

The title is certainly provocative: Estonians killing Jews yet without hatred. Does such a chilling contention of dispassionate cold-blooded murder even make sense?

If you are prepared to read Murder Without Hatred to find out who says what about the Holocaust in Estonia and the wider Baltic states, the work is a veritable compendium of "he-said"s, "she-said"s for those who can tell difference. Weiss-Wendt includes them all: reputable scholars; the German school and others advocating for the Germanless Holocaust; and KGB archives known to be tainted, targeting Baltic and Ukrainian nationals--the Soviet Union's most troublesome nationalities at home and the most visible and organized anti-Communists in the post-WWII diaspora.

Whose account to trust? In one sentence, someone has been saved, cited to a respected Holocaust scholar. The next? A Baltic collaborator orders the deaths of civilians on pure whimsy: brutal, senseless, Germanless, cited directly to KGB archives. And therein lies the crux of the issue. Voluminous and careful citations are not enough to create a meaningful study of the Holocaust in the Baltics. The responsibility of the historian is to audit and make sense of incompatible accounts and allegations. In presenting all sources as equally valid, Weiss-Wendt abrogates that responsibility, leaving that task to the wholly unprepared reader.

In failing to differentiate between the likely and unlikely--based on our detailed knowledge of the Nazi control and command structure, processes, and procedures pursuing the extinction of Jews in Eastern Europe--his impossible amalgam of immiscible sources unintentionally elevates historical propaganda to a level on par with legitimate historical scholarship. The contradictions Weiss-Wendt ultimately seeks to reconcile lie within the historical accounts which form the basis of his narrative--and not in the Estonian psyche.

Weiss-Wendt's meticulous research and uncommon and welcome transparency of scholarship hold the promise of a definitive new work on the Holocaust; however, Weiss-Wendt neither highlights nor accounts for agendas buried within historical accounts of the Holocaust in the Baltics and Eastern Europe.

In its second half, this volume shifts its attention to the concept of "memory practices," ways of cultural remembering that result from and are shaped by particular cultural forms. Many of these cultural forms embody memory materially through language, music, and photography and, because of their distinctive expressions of culture, give rise to distinctive memory practices. Gathering the leading voices in Irish studies, this volume opens new pathways into the body of Irish cultural memory, demonstrating time and again the ways in which memory is supported by the negotiations of individuals within wider cultural contexts.

Hauntingly beautiful

I got this book on the recommendation of a friend who spent time in Maine. It is part history and part memoir, and all wonderful. The loss of the author's son and the subsequent coming to terms with it is at the heart of the book. It really brings out the way locations come to hold meaning for us, but can help us heal from the most tragic events possible.

The First Successful Vampire Tale and What It Has to Say

Written in 1872, editor Kathleen Costello-Sullivan describes Carmilla as "the overlooked older sister of Bram Stoker's later and more acclaimed work, Dracula". It has also been described as 'the first successful vampire story'. Yet, despite the proliferation of modern day vampire tales, Carmilla continues to be overlooked. And that's a shame because, not only was it a great influence on Dracula and, therefore, on all that followed but it is a pretty interesting tale in its own right. And, unlike most of these later tales, Carmilla seems to be so much more than just a simple tale of (almost) everyone's favourite creature of the night.

The story itself is fairly short and, in the manner of the time, more descriptive than action and dialogue. But it must have been rather shocking to the audience at the time given some of its apparent themes. And here is why I really enjoyed this particular edition. It not only gives the tale as it first appeared in In A Glass Darkly but the latter half of the book is devoted to analyses of the story including the hinted lesbianism and the political and cultural motifs, as well as the psychology. There is also a look at the history of the times under which Le Fanu wrote including the Anglo-Irish question.

I won't say that Carmilla is an easy read - I have seen too many reviews of Victorian literature to believe that everyone shares my love of the era and its writers - but, for anyone who does enjoy the classics and is interested in the less well-known but equally fascinating and important works of the period, Carmilla is well worth the time and effort. And, for those who want to understand the motifs, themes, and background of the novella, this edition edited by Kathleen Costello-Sullivan and put out by Syracuse University Press, will give you plenty to think about.

The Lady is a Vamp

Set in 19th century Austria, Laura is a lonely young woman living with her father and their two servants in the Styrian countryside until one fateful night when she and her father encounter a mysterious stagecoach barrelling through the forest near their house. Rather rashly, her father agrees to let the sickly young woman inside stay in their house while her strange mother continue on her journey. And then people in the surrounding area start dying of an unknown disease and the peasants start muttering about an “oupire”. Who, or what, is Laura’s new friend, Carmilla, really – and will she survive the encounter long enough to find out?

Nowadays vampires are so prevalent in popular culture, nearly everyone knows about them. Their traits, their behaviours, every aspect of the vampire is so well defined that this Victorian story can seem quaint in the way it plays up the mystery of Carmilla. But when J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella Carmilla was published in 1872 (the year before the author’s death), the vampire was a relatively unknown creature in popular culture. John Polidori’s short story The Vampyre had been published to some success a few decades earlier and the pulpy Varney the Vampire had been a popular series, but Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the most famous vampire novel ever written and the book that would launch vampires permanently into the mainstream, wouldn’t appear for another 25 years.

In fact, Carmilla is credited by Stoker as an influence in the creation of his novel, and it’s easy to see why. The fangs and nightly blood-sucking, sleeping in a coffin in a ruined chapel, the associations of vampires with nobility, the ability for vampires to transform into animals, the aversion to Christianity, eternal life and youth, and the strong ties between vampires and sexuality all appear in Carmilla. Perhaps the reason why Carmilla wasn’t the success that Dracula was lies in its female protagonist and her relationship with the female vampire that Le Fanu implies went beyond mere friendship.

The story opens when 6 year old Laura meets the beautiful young woman Carmilla, whom she doesn’t know by name yet, but who appears in her room nightly to drink her blood. When her nursemaid acts on her suspicions, a ritual from a priest is performed and Laura is no longer visited by the vampire. But years later, when our story takes place and Laura is 19, Carmilla re-enters her life, and Laura recognises her as the youthful visitor who used to bite her breast as a child – though she seems to have no trouble accepting that Carmilla hasn’t aged in 13 years! Instead, Laura’s feelings confuse her as she is both drawn to and repulsed by her though describes Carmilla as beautiful. Later, when the two are alone in Carmilla’s bedroom, she makes a move on Laura, kissing her and drawing close to her, talking intensely and unequivocally about how Laura belongs to her.

In this sense, Carmilla is a surprisingly un-Victorian story as it’s basically a lesbian vampire story! You could take this idea further still - if you interpret vampirism as a metaphor for homosexuality, you might even read the subtext of Carmilla’s speech to Laura’s father, explaining this “disease”, meaning vampires, as a sexually progressive argument:

“‘Creator! Nature!’ said the young lady in answer to my gentle father. ‘And this disease that invades the country is natural. Nature. All things proceed from Nature - don’t they? All things in the heaven, in the earth, and under the earth, act and live as Nature ordains? I think so,’” (p.39)

Besides the sexual undertones of the story, there are a number of memorable scenes that stand out for their rich, gothic imagery. Ruined chapels, castles with drawbridges, haunting forests with crumbling Christian totems, all bathed in a twilit glow and set against the schloss and background of the 19th century Austrian countryside. Le Fanu continues to hint at Carmilla’s true identity, though to modern audiences, it’s either known before you pick up the book what’s what, or you’ve guessed it within Carmilla’s first appearance. Nonetheless, there are a number of interesting scenes that will become classic staples of vampire fiction such as Laura looking at a painting from 1698 (150 years before this story is set) of a noblewoman called Mircalla who looks identical to Carmilla (and whose name nobody seems to notice is an anagram of Carmilla) strongly implying Carmilla’s immortality, or the image of Carmilla drenched in blood and standing at the foot of Laura’s bed when she awakens in the middle of the night!

By far my favourite scene was Carmilla’s entrance where a blighted carriage rumbles precariously through the moonlit forest path, nearly toppling at the sight of an ancient Christian cross as its horses react violently to the religious symbol. Laura watches as her father approaches and before long Carmilla emerges to go back with them. Meanwhile, Laura observes inside the carriage the “hideous black woman, with a sort of colored turban on her head” who is presumably Carmilla’s mother, if not guardian, who nods and grins derisively at her with “gleaming eyes and large white eyeballs, and her teeth set as if in fury”. And the carriagemen, described as “ugly hang-dog-looking fellows” - couple this ghoulish group with Carmilla and it’s like the carriage was regurgitated from Hell itself!

Not every aspect of the modern vampire mythos is laid out here - Carmilla walks about in daylight and can see her reflection in the mirror, while the creation of a vampire is rather glibly described by Le Fanu as someone evil who kills themselves, and somehow becomes a vampire. They then feed on others, draining the blood of their victims until they die and then rise from the grave, vampires themselves. The second part was used in Dracula and kind of makes sense in a parasitic way but the original vampire creation is very weak.

If Le Fanu’s story is unconventional for its time, his writing is unfortunately all too similar to his Victorian contemporaries. Overwritten scenes, overwrought dialogue, overly proper behaviour all make this book a rather slow read even though it’s barely 100 pages long and its predictability too doesn’t help. However, Carmilla has remained in print at least in part because it’s an original and striking story whose titular character would go on to influence numerous horror writers to create their own female vampires in her mould. The imagery and the vampiric scenes do still retain their ability to mesmerise modern audiences, and for fans of the literary sub-genre of vampire fiction, it’s worth reading Carmilla to see where a number of tropes and stock characters originated, in particular the Van Helsing figure in this book, General Spielsdorf.

There’s certainly more than enough here to warrant the classic label it’s earned since it was first published, and it’s story is a lot more interesting than many other classics too! So, if you’re feeling sinister, take a trip to Styria and meet the eternally youthful Carmilla - she’ll never let you leave!

'But dreams come through stone walls...'

Although overshadowed by the later Dracula, Carmilla still stands out as one of the best of the gothic vampire stories. This book includes the story itself in its original form, together with an introduction and four critical essays that set out to analyse the text from a variety of perspectives.

Atmospheric and chilling, Carmilla has everything we could want - gothic ruins, beautiful victim, even more beautiful and extremely sexy vampire, midnight terrors and a climactic graveyard scene. Throw in some very Victorian-style lesbian eroticism and Le Fanu's fine writing and it's no surprise that Carmilla continues to be influential on writers and filmmakers even today. It's been years since I read it last, as part of Le Fanu's In a Glass Darkly collection, and I found I enjoyed it very much on re-reading.

However the main purpose of this book is to critically re-analyse Carmilla and (somewhat to my surprise) I found the critical essays at least as enjoyable, if not more so, than the story itself. Jarlath Killeen places the story in its Irish context, arguing that it can be seen as a metaphor for the position of the contemporary Anglo-Irish community. Renee Fox also positions the book in an Irish context but argues convincingly against the picture of Laura representing the Protestant victim to Carmilla's Catholic aggressor. Lisabeth C Buchelt looks at the aesthetic positioning of the story in a very interesting and informative essay. And finally, Nancy M West takes us on a run through of the films that have been either adapted from or influenced by Carmilla, with a look at how the lesbianism in the story has been dealt with over the years.

In conclusion, if you are interested in the story but not the criticism, then much better to get this as part of In a Glass Darkly. However, I found the criticisms interesting and thought-provoking, and for me they have enhanced the story without destroying any of its original impact. I therefore heartily recommend this book.

Suffers from an anachronistic feel...

The title of Moghadam's collection of essays promises stories of women's progression "from patriarchy to empowerment" but several entries indicate otherwise: Bedouin girls in Israel dropping out of high school; women in Nepal suffering from depression, and women across the Muslim world facing persecution and legal restrictions, as stated by Judith Colp Rubin in the Middle East Quarterly.

Some of the more informative entries are "Mobilizing Women for Nationalist Agendas," a detailed account of the political status of women in the Palestinian Authority by Deborah J. Gerner, "Feminist Organizing in Tunisia," by Sarah E. Gilman focusing on women's struggles in the most liberated of all the Arab nations, and Nilufer Narli's "Women in Political Parties in Turkey," examining a country in which women have enjoyed a comparatively high level of political rights since the days of Kemal Atäturk. But because many of its essays deal with topics and rely on information at least a decade old, the book suffers from an anachronistic feel; its usefulness as a tool for understanding the current status of women in the region thus suffers.

One of the most important essays in the book that attempts to fill this gap is Moghadam's own "Peace-Building and Reconstruction with Women," which describes the status today of women in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Palestinian Authority. But this chapter, as well as several others, has a political agenda: Ex-colonial powers are both to blame for many hardships of women in these regions and must improve their plight. In discussing Iraq, Moghadam writes that U.S. reconstruction efforts will not necessarily help women because "they entail the privatization of Iraqi assets and special deals for U.S. corporations." In "Education, Tradition, and Modernization," Sarab Abu-Rabia Queder puts the onus on Israel to prevent more Bedouin girls from dropping out of high school, rather than on the Bedouins themselves, whose culture does not value female education. The book pays little attention to the challenge of Islamism.

Moghadam poses an interesting question: In South Africa, Namibia, and Rwanda, three countries whose repressive regimes have been replaced by democracies, women have become significantly more empowered than in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, regions with a much richer historic women's movement. Perhaps the development of democracy and political moderation and the absence of radical Islam are the key factors--points unfortunately not raised in From Patriarchy to Empowerment.

Using the experience of postwar Western Europe as a benchmark, José Antonio Ocampo and his colleagues assess how regional financial institutions can help developing countries—often at a disadvantage within the global financial framework— finance their investment needs, counteract the volatility of private capital flows, and make their voices heard. The 1997 Asian financial crisis generated extensive debate on the international financial architecture. Through this discussion, it became clear that services by financial institutions— including adequate mechanisms for preventing and managing financial crises, and instruments for safeguarding global macroeconomic and financial stability—are undersupplied. Furthermore, private international capital markets provide finance to developing countries in a way that effectively reduces the ability of those nations to undertake countercyclical macroeconomic policies. International capital markets ration out many developing countries, particularly the poorest, from private global capital markets. While these deficiencies in the financial architecture are clear, the post-1997 debate has done little to evaluate the role that regional institutions could play in improving global financial arrangements. Regional Financial Cooperation aims to fill that important gap. About the Author

José Antonio Ocampo currently serves as United Nations under secretary general for economics and social affairs and is the former executive secretary of ECLAC. He has also held a number of posts in the government of Columbia, including minister of finance and public credit. He is the author of several books on globalization and development, including Beyond Reforms: Structural Dynamics and Macroeconomic Vulnerability (World Bank and Stanford University Press, 2005).
