Ken Frieden is B. G. Rudolph Professor of Judaic Studies and director of the Judaic Studies Program at Syracuse University. Ted Gorelick was a leading translator of Abramovitsh and Sholem . Michael Wex is the author of Shlepping the Exile and five plays. Recently, he translated S. Y. Abramovitsh's The Wishing Ring, also published by Syracuse University Press.

Turn-of-the-century Life: E. European Culture and Humor

Discovered this volume of translated Yiddish stories quite by chance or more likely by "serendipity" as Dr. Carl Gustav Jung would say. My reading interests lean toward understanding different cultures, religious beliefs and customs. This book covers all these topics This book contains the writing of three famous authors, S.Y. Abramovitsh, called "the grandfather of modern Yiddish literature", Sholem Aleichem, considered "grandson" to the master who adds a comedic twist to his stories, and I.L. Peretz who according to the introduction founded modern Yiddish modernism. I knew I was in for a delicious treat as I read the first page of the first story ...

"The Little Man: or Portait of a Life" begins with Mendele the Book Peddler introducing himself and his trade ... how as he travels from place to place he learns about human behavior as he indulges his curiousity in observing and commenting about people. The reader is tickled by the translation as Mendele shares his deep insights about human nature, with a wonderful Yiddish accent. He sums up part of his philosophy as follows, "Believe me, all the world is a marketplace. Everyone wants the other guy to lose so he could gain. Everyone is looking for bargains. ... Rich people always seem a little lost and worried. If you've got money, what's to worry about? Seems to me that you don't need any fancy ideas about money. But I am getting off the point". [p.5] Needless to say, it is a highly educational experience to learn how Mendele concludes what characteristics describe "the little man". Indeed, his views apply to modern man in the 21st century!!

The second story, "Fishke, the Lame: A Story of Poor Jewish Folks" is another brilliantly written story . The reader is provided a description of an afternoon on the 17th of Tammuz in the heat of the summer ... you can just see the flies buzzing and feel the humidity and sweltering heat, no breeze, no relief of a rain shower in sight. At the foot of the Green Mountain, children are dancing and singing, as people greet the Reb, his only response is "Bah!" In this unique story, the reader is introduced to the concept, even the lame and crippled are G-d's children and, as such, entitled to some happiness and earthly pleasures. We are provided glimpses of life lived in the late 1860s. At the time, Fishke, the Lame was matched to marry "the blind orphan girl". Fishke had often been over-looked in the past from this time-honored tradition of matching up cripples, scoundrels, and beggars with unmarried girls. This usually occured during epidemics and conscriptions, in hopes of ending the events in question. Unexpectedly, this story provides greater insight into the behavior of one of the more prominent upright citizens of the community rather than the lame and crippled.

Sholem Aleichem's story "Hodel" provides a marvellous description of how one of the dairy farmer's beautiful daughters gets married to a student, whose subject of study is secretive. Hodel suddenly gets an interest in reading books and grammar after the student becomes a guest boarder in the Tevye's home ... The conversations and colloquial speech are rendered so effectively this story is a pleasure to read. All the stories are superbly written! This book provides the modern reader an outstanding cast of colorful and memorable characters who live an almost mythical existence during one the most unique times in history. The stories are so great that I also bought it for my kindle so I didn't have to carry the book around - I'm glad that I have the book, because it's the type of book I want to see on my book shelf. Not just to how it off, but because seeing it makes me want to pick it up again!

Fascinating Read

Winston has quite the interesting idea. Essentially he argues that privatizing and deregulating all forms of infrastructure, particularly transportation systems, would be beneficial for Americans. I used this book in my research paper calling for the elimination of Amtrak and a new High Speed Rail system in the North East Corridor. I do think, however, that he does not accept the realities of privatization. One only needs to look at the disaster that ensued following Thatcher's deregulation of the UK's rail system for an ideal example. While in general I agree with his argument, certain precautions must be taken in any move (to be fair, he argues that we should use a test case before engaging in any large-scale projects).

The result is what he terms "policy churn," which distracts teachers and principals from efforts to refine classroom teaching while seldom resulting in successful long-term changes. Hess argues that policymakers have misallocated resources by pursuing the "right" structure or the "best" pedagogy while paying insufficient attention to the more mundane--and more important--questions of how to implement, refine, and sustain a particular approach in their particular district. Hess explains that previous research on high-performing schools suggests that the best schools are characterized by focus and by an ability to develop expertise in specific approaches to teaching and learning. To help educators and policymakers adopt and nurture a focused agenda, he recommends institutional changes that increase the effectiveness of performance outcomes and reduce the incentives to emphasize symbolic reform.

Frederick M. Hess is the director of Education Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. He is the coauthor (with Michael J. Petrilli) of No Child Left Behind Primer (Peter Lang, 2006) and editor of Educational Entrepreneurship (Harvard Education Press, 2006).

Larger problem, whole society

I agree with the review of Henry Cate III. I have read a large number of books about education and I think the author is quite correct. However, it is an even larger problem. Any attempt at making major improvements in education is I believe a futile effort. The education system, like the criminal justice system and the health care system reflect the society as a whole with its characteristic problems, inequality, injustice, and incoherence. These systems of symptoms and will not be improved until the general society is improved or changed fundamentally. I am not talking about socialist revolution but a fundamental increase in fairness and equal opportunity and decrease in discrimination and all of the barriers to fairness and equal opportunity. We won't have any real progress in any sphere until we can eliminate the essential corruption at the heart of our society and economy. There are many good people working in the education field and good work being done and this should be continued simultaneous to general efforts to improve our society.

Spinning wheels - about lots of energy, but no progress

This book is about a very basic problem in urban schools, the problem of reform churn. In surveying over 60 urban schools, the author found that there is a pattern of school boards hiring new school superintendents, who comes in with great promise and lots of new ideas. There are lots of changes for a couple years, but there is no dramatic improvement, so the current school superintendent gets fired because things are still bad. Then a new superintendent comes in, again promising to fix things by implementing a lot of changes. The net result is no reform last long enough to truly fix any problems. The school district keeps lurching in different directions every couple years, never making any real progress.

A pattern on constant reform is not new. Frederick Hess analyses the environment that produces this pattern in the school environment. He finds that in general members of the school board want to be re-elected. Many are using the office of school board as a stepping stone to other elected political offices. In general school boards which fight with each other don't get re-elected, so they are motivated to find issues they can agree on, and reform is an issue for which most board members see a need. So when there is a problem in the school district, they don't hire a new school superintendent who comes in promising to continue the reforms of the previous superintendent, they hire someone with fresh new ideas. The result is the old reforms which may have just started producing fruit are ignored and teachers are told to try some new methods. The result is things are not improving in the urban schools.

The author makes the point that schools deal with two very important subjects, children and money. People are concerned that both are taken care of well. Unfortunately there are no simple objective measures to see how well a school is doing. This is partly the result of there being no clear, agreed upon, purpose to education. Some want children taught academic subjects, some want children to learn to be good citizens, some want children to be taught to take care of the earth, and so on. All of this means that people care very much about schools, but people can't tell how well a school is doing. So appearances become very important. Both the school board and the superintendent are strongly influenced to put on a good front.

This idea of appearances being very important is explored in great depth in the book. And other related ideas are mentioned on why there is such a dizzying rate of reform efforts in urban schools.

The book is well written. It is well structured. The author has done his research. It is interesting to read, though often painful to learn how bad things are. If you are looking for a better understanding of one of the key problems with public schools, this book is very worth reading.

Spinning Wheels and the Collapse of Adminstrative Model

The book Spinning Wheels represents a series of books that have outlined the breakdown of the traditional adminstrative model of education. The book does an outstanding job investigating the inherent paradoxes of urban education. The traditional model has collapsed and a new model for the 21st Century is critical to the future K-12 education in America. It is amazing that the restructuring of the Adminstrative cadre has not taken place in 1999. The tragedy of the traditional model is that it does not reflect the massive changes of the quality management movement instituted by Juran. The mistaken notion that today's adminstrative cadre needs no essential training in modern management theory and practice is very similar to the Communist Chinese cadre who believe that a modern capitalistic economy can be created without a fundamental understanding of modern economic theory and practice. Spinning Wheels captures the triumph of political rhetoric over real managerial changes that need to be implemented in adminstration. The modern urban superintendent is trapped by a demographic paradox between the X generation and the Achievement generation that has created a "policy churn" in the killing fields of modern urban education.

Midget, feeble-minded, crippled, lame and insane: these terms and the historical photographs that accompany them may seem shocking to present-day audiences. A young woman with no arms wears a sequined tutu and smiles for the camera as she holds a tea cup with her toes; a man holds up two prosthetic leges while his own legs are bared to the knees to show his missing feet. The photos were used as promotional material for circus sideshows, charity drives, and hung in art galleries. They were found on begging cards and in family albums. In Picturing Disability Bogdan and his collaborators gather over 200 historical photographs showing how people with disabilities have been presented and exploring the contexts in which they were photographed.
     Rather than focus on the subjects. Bogdan turns his gaze on the people behind the camera. He examines the historic and cultural environment of the photographs to decipher the relationship between the images and the perspectives of the picture makers. In analyzing the visual rhetoric of these photographs, Bogdan identifies the wide variety of genres, from sideshow souvenirs to clinical photographs. Ranging from the 1860s, when photographs first became readily available, to the 1970s, when the disability rights movement became a force for significant change, Bogdan chronicles the evolution of disability image creation. Picturing Disability takes the reader beyond judging images as positive or slanderous to reveal how particular contexts generate specific emotions and lasting depictions.

"Picturing Disability: Beggard, Freak, Citizen, and Other Photographic Rhetoric" is an eye-opening look at human beings that are quite different and, as such, have historically compelled a variety of emotional reactions. This publication has gathered a remarkable collection of images to present insights and information that makes this a combined scholarly and popular publication, both historical and cultural. Each chapter presents numerous images and examines people with particular disabilities and the conditions of their existence. Beware... you'll spend more time with this publication than you anticipate. Yes, curiosity will cause you to pursue it with mixed motivations but the result is greater understanding of the "disabled" and of ourselves. It's a unusual and valuable education.

A Remarkable, Unique, and Important History of Disability

Robert Bogdan and his colleagues have written a remarkable book. It is remarkable because it combines hundreds of old photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia. Each of these items comes from scarce venues - flea markets, auctions, and Ebay, and all represent images of the "feeble-minded," "freaks," beggars, and other disabled people, The book would be important simply from these items, but the authors give the reader a detailed and insightful history, using clear social theory and the most current historical methods. In doing so, the book provides the antique items context and meaning. For the history of disability, the book is a must.

Absolutely Fascinating

An absolutely fascinating book which though rather academic kept me spellbound and is an easy read. This book deals with two topics I am most particularly interested in: 1) the treatment of the disabled in the early part of the 20th century and earlier and 2) unsettling or unique vintage photographs. The author covers the periods from the 1860s to the 1970s, however, the majority of the photographs studied mainly fall between the 1880s and the 1930s. The aspect that most drew me to this book and that I appreciated most was that the author investigates the photography of the disabled from the point of view of the purpose of the photographer and photograph within the era and society from which it comes. There is no modern chastising. The author warns in the Introduction that some people may find his treatise offensive because of this, but that is far from the intentions of his sociological intentions. I found the book entirely engrossing since I am interested in the field.

The book is divided into chapters concentrating on one type/genre of photograph each. Starting off with circus sideshow promotional photographs and beggar cards, while most insensitive by today's standards these are also some of the most controlled by the subject of the photograph as they more often than not were in charge of their own publicity. The most disturbing chapters for me were the one on medical text photography (often eugenics texts), photographs from inside mental institutions and most surprisingly "art" photos which turn a person's deformities, pain, anguish into "art" to be critiqued for light, shadow, composition, etc. The author even discusses the modern use of disabled people as featured in faked "natural" settings vs the truly natural family album photograph where the disabled friend or family member is included in a manner that does not call attention to their disability. I enjoyed the book immensely! The book is extremely readable and engrossing for anyone interested in or studying the topic.

About the Author
Martin Buber (1878 1965), is among the foremost twentieth-century philosophers of human relations and Jewish thought. He is best known for his revival of popular interest in Hasidism and his philosophy of dialogue, a form of existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou and I-It relationships. His work on Hasidic thought, Zionism and religious philosophy continues to influence both the academic study of Judaism and religious thinking more broadly. He also inspired the trend toward neo-Hasidism among modern Jews. His books include I and Thou, Tales of the Hasidim, On Judaism and many others.

Jewish Emunah and Christian Pistis

Buber outlines here the difference between two kinds of faith the emunah of the Jews, and the pistis of the Christians. In doing so he also writes sympathetically about Jesus who he sees in some way as part of the spiritual history of Israel. For Buber the Jews faith is communal and centers on their persistence in history in continuing their communal religious life. He sees Christianity as having a different kind of faith one which focuses on individuals, and the individual salvation. In his concluding chapter he suggests that in the future each might take a bit more of the character of the other( not in doctrine) but in the Jewish faith becoming more pistis and the Christians moving more toward a communal faith. In the introduction to the work Buber thanks great Christian scholars with whom he was in dialogue, Rudolf Bultmann, Schweitzer, and Rudolf Otto. Clearly he was living and working toward Jewish- Christian dialogue as extension of his belief in the importance of meeting and making relationships with others in which the full humanity of both parties could be lived and expressed.

A Shift of Emphasis; Communal to Personal Faith

Emil Brunner who once said that Buber's discovery and analysis of the I-Thou relationship set up a Copernician revolution in the thinking of the whole of mankind, described Buber's 'faith versus faith' essay as; "An all-out attack on Christianity", and an attempt by Buber to clarify why he came short of becoming a Christian! (Dogmatic Theology, E. Brunner)
It may be that Buber glittering philosophic rhetoric, at once attracted and repelled, despite his literary talent, as his best analytical critic, Monsignor Oesterreicher described him, borrowing william James useful taxonomy, "Buber seemed 'tender minded' to one whose nature and philosophical nurture honor by preference 'tough minded' thinkers!

The late Karl Thieme joined Catholicism, leaving his Lutheran Church due to the latter adjustment to Nazi policy, excluding clergy of Jewish origins from its service. Thieme, rejecting the 'two types of faith' whimsical view, asserted that Christian's faith differed from Jewish faith by a 'Shift of emphasis.' He criticized Buber's reading of Paul's theology, encountering in his letter to the Romans 'A wrathful God' rather than 'A Loving Father.'
"I am saddened that Buber's aversion to Paul was so strong that he was unable to appreciate the Apostle's loving avowal of God's special bond to His people in Romans 9 to 11...I am at a loss to understand why Buber did not give Paul the regard that is his due.' comments Oesterreicher on Thieme parallel views.

Buber's faith Vs Torah:
In his exploration of the 'two forms' of faith, first as a member of community, whose covenant with the unconditioned, trusts in a person, vs. an individual converted to faith, in acceptance of a truth, associating with other converts to form a community.
While Hillel, the great rabbi, held his Golden rule of Jewish faith as; "The whole Torah, and, the rest is commentary," Buber writes, "I do not believe that revelation is ever a formulation of law. It is only through Man in his self-contradiction that revelation becomes legislation." Buber' Letter to Rosenzweig

The Risen Christ:
It is clear why the resurrection was such a stumbling block to Buber, that he took offense debating; "the Jew of Paul's time,...believed in the resurrection of the dead as a great community at the end of time; but the resurrection of an individual was unknown to the Jew from scripture..." Buber's conclusion against the core of Christian faith is : "The resurrection of an individual (Jesus) is incredible to Jews,"
Shmuel Bergmann, a great Jewish thinker, and a friend of Buber whom he asked to review the manuscript (Two Types of Faith), wrote in 1949; "If the resurrection (of Jesus) really happened, it was such a decisive event-the fact that a human being conquered death-such a new beginning in human history that Paul was right to attribute to faith in that fact a decisive significance."

One of the foremost religious thinkers of the twentieth century, M. Buber made a tremendous impact, not only on Jewish but also on Christian thinkers. Reinhold Niebuhr has described him as "the greatest Jewish philosopher of our time"
In nominating Buber for a Nobel Prize in literature in 1949, H. Hesse stated that, "He has enriched world-literature with a genuine treasure as has no other living author."

Great Thought, Lesser Translation

The translation is somewhat unclear, but his brilliance comes through. His thoughtful and respectful discussion of both religions is both enlightening and kind. He challenges me to think more deeply, delve more deeply into thought and spirituality-the only drawback is the occasional translation flow. I suspect the original language had much better onomatopoeia.

Although it is a memoir, Lucinda reads like a sentimental epistolary novel, where the heroine is seduced, abandoned, and then dies in isolation shortly after her illegitimate child is born. Mischelle B. Anthony’s critical edition rescues this once popular cautionary tale from obscurity and positions it among such classic early American narratives as Charlotte Temple and The Coquette.

P. D. Manvill was born Martha Dyer Waterman to a prominent Rhode Island family in 1764. Lucinda is her only known publication. Mischelle B. Anthony is associate professor of English at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. She has published numerous articles on early American literature.

This collection of 14 essays, generated by a 1990 conference on the Vietnam antiwar movement, analyzes movement strategies, the role of the military and women in resistance, and the movement in the schools. While the essays contain much useful information, including some new material based on oral histories, they lack the narrative drive of less academic histories. A few of the contributions stand out: historian Maurice Isserman, analyzing the triumph of militance over pacifism in Students for a Democratic Society, says that its rank and file was more diverse and less radical than the leadership; peace activist David McReynolds reflects on how more radical social critics shook pacifists' ``unexamined'' view of America; David Cortwright, a former soldier-activist, traces the socioeconomic profiles of GIs who practiced dissent and disobedience, noting that volunteers opposed the war more than draftees. Particularly stimulating is historian Kenneth J. Heineman's portrait of Kent State University, which, contrary to myth, had been a hotbed of activism. Small wrote Resort to Arms ; Hoover is a professor of history at the University of Toledo.

About the Author
Melvin Small is Distinguished Professor of History at Wayne State University and chair of the university's Abraham Lincoln Brigade Scholarship Fund. His most recent book is "At the Water's Edge: American Politics and the Vietnam War".

George S. McGovern represented South Dakota in the United States Senate from 1963 to 1981 and was the Democratic nominee for president in 1972. He was a decorated bomber pilot in World War II, after which he earned his Ph.D. in American history and government at Northwestern University. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he died in 2012.
