Grand Opportunity: The Gaelic Revival and Irish Society, 1893-1910 (Irish Studies), by Timothy G. McMahon

In this groundbreaking work, Timothy McMahon reexamines the significance
of the Gaelic Revival in forming Ireland's national identity.
United in their determination to preserve and extend the use of Irish
as a spoken language and artistic medium, members of the Gaelic
Revival profoundly influenced Irish culture and literature in the twentieth
century. McMahon explores that influence by scrutinizing the
ways in which society absorbed their leaders' message, tracing the
interaction between the ideas propagated by the Gaelic League
and the variety of meanings ordinary people attached Ireland and
being Irish.
Comparing press and police reports with census data and local
directories, the author establishes the first comprehensive profile of
League membership. McMahon's abilty to access both Englishand
Irish-language sources offers readers a rare and richly detailed
analysis of primary materials. Grand Opportunity addresses questions
that are central to understanding modern Irish identity and makes
an indispensable contribution to the wider study of national identity
formation.

Review
...most illuminating account of a movement that was pardoxically so successful in the short run and eventually failed... -- Emmet Larkin, Professor Emeritus, University of Chicago

McMahon's book, thus, manages to be both irenic and radical at the same time...In addition, it is written in an accessible style, sometimes focusing on individual life studies such as that of Eoghan O'Growney. --New Hibernia Review

Mega-Projects: The Changing Politics of Urban Public Investment, by Alan A. Altshuler, David E. Luberoff

Since the demise of urban renewal in the early 1970s, the politics of large-scale public investment in and around major American cities has received little scholarly attention. In MEGA-PROJECTS, Alan Altshuler and David Luberoff analyze the unprecedented wave of large-scale (mega-) public investments that occurred in American cities during the 1950s and 1960s; the social upheavals they triggered, which derailed large numbers of projects during the late 1960s and early 1970s; and the political impulses that have shaped a new generation of urban mega-projects in the decades since. They also appraise the most important consequences of policy shifts over this half-century and draw out common themes from the rich variety of programmatic and project developments that they chronicle. The authors integrate narratives of national as well as state and local policymaking, and of mobilization by (mainly local) project advocates, with a profound examination of how well leading theories of urban politics explain the observed realities. The specific cases they analyze include a wide mix of transportation and downtown revitalization projects, drawn from numerous regions—most notably Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Portland, and Seattle. While their original research focuses on highway, airport, and rail transit programs and projects, they draw as well on the work of others to analyze the politics of public investment in urban renewal, downtown retailing, convention centers, and professional sports facilities. In comparing their findings with leading theories of urban and American politics, Altshuler and Luberoff arrive at some surprising findings about which perform best and also reveal some important gaps in the literature as a whole. In a concluding chapter, they examine the potential effects of new fiscal pressures, business mobilization to relax environmental constraints, and security concerns in the wake of September 11. And they make clear their own views about how best to achieve a balance between developmental, environmental, and democratic values in public investment decisionmaking. Integrating fifty years of urban development history with leading theories of urban and American politics, MEGA-PROJECTS provides significant new insights into urban and intergovernmental politics.

Review

"If you are looking for an economic quotient to keep a sports team in town, 'Mega-Projects' convincingly argues there isn't one. That, of course, is the end of the argument for some, but not the end of the argument for American cities." —James Vesely, Seattle Times, 5/7/2006

"An important new book... The larger question of what public works will be like in the aftermath of the Big Dig deserves serious attention from scholars and practitioners. It is now getting that attention from two of the best: Alan Altshuler and David Luberoff" —Alan Ehrenhalt, Governing

"A significant book that fills an important gap in our understanding of urban development politics. Altshuler and Luberoff have tackled a tremendous topic with both breadth and depth. It is a superb achievement sure to have a lasting impact on urban scholars and policymakers alike." —Lynne Sagalyn, Columbia Business School

"A fascinating, theoretically rich study of the politics of public investment in urban America —with particular attention to the strategies employed by public officials and business coalitions, and to the ways in which they have adapted to new opportunities and constraints over the past half-century." —Jameson W. Doig, Princeton University

"Same article appeared in: San Diego Union-Tribune, Contra Costa Times, Times Union, Orlando Sentinel, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tulsa World, Patriot News" —Mark Pratt, Associated Press, Various Newspapers, 12/21/2003

"Same article appeared in: Times Union, Charleston Gazette, The Commercial Appeal" —Steve LeBlanc, Associated Press, Various Newspapers, 1/18/2004

"Guided by Altshuler and Luberoff's excellent analytical survey, we can see that it is also a quick trip backward to the pre-1950 era of urban self-reliance" —Hubert Murray, AIA, RIBA, ArchitectureBoston, 3/1/2004

"Escalating costs, complications, and delays are pretty much guaranteed in major public works projects these days, according to Altshuler and Luberoff... They don't pronounce the death of all megaprojects. But with money short and homeland security costs mounting, they believe such projects may not get much consideration in the near term." —Anthony Flint, Boston Globe, 5/19/2003

"This is a unique analysis in its linking of theory and detail" —W. C. Johnson, Bethel College (MN), Choice, 2/1/2004

"As with a novel in which one recognizes oneself in one of the characters, this survey of politics and projects can be read as a history of Boston from Mayor Collins to Mayor Menino. The striking aspect of the narrative, and perhaps the comfort, is that readers from Seattle, Denver, Atlanta -- or any number of other American cities -- might similarly recognize their own urban histories in its pages.... Guided by Altshuler and Luberoff's excelent analytical survey, we can see that it is also a quick trip backward to the pre-1950 era of urban self-reliance." —Hubert Murray, principal of Hubert Murray Architect & Planner in Cambridge, MA, Architecture Boston, 3/1/2004

"....necessary reading for students and professionals interested in creating vital urban environments of the future." —Arthur C. Nelson, Director of Urban Affairs and Planning, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, The Journal of Planning Education and Research, 4/1/2004

"... Mega-Projects is a major contribution to urban development policy and should attract a broad interdisciplinary scholarly audience, as well as urban policymakers and stakeholders." —Steven P. Erie, University of California, San Diego, Perspectives on Politics, 3/1/2004

"... seeks to comprehend the main lines of thought in US urban politics, to develop case studies of mega-projects that inform theory, and to defend a nuanced affiliation with the Harvard tradition of conservative urbanism.... The excellence of the effort cannot be denied.... The most engaging portion of the book... is the case studies, particularly the chapters on the Big Dig and the Denver airport, both tales well told." —Laura Pangallozi, Rutgers University, Regional Studies, 6/1/2004

"...would make fine additions to most upper-division and graduate urban politics and development classes." —Mark S. Rosentraub, Cleveland State University, City and Community, 11/1/2004

"By letting readers make their own judgments, Altshuler and Luberoff avoid the standard trap that comes from taking a small piece of data and make it fit the wider world. Mega-Projects adds an important body of work to our understanding of urban politics and public choice." —Jay H. Walder and Shashi K. Verma, Managing Director of Finance and Planning and Principal in Corporate Finance at Transport for London, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, 12/4/2004

"This is a superbly written book.... The authors provide an intriguing and penetrating examination that only a political scientist and journalist can together offer." —Narry T. Dimitriou, Bartlett School of Planning, University College London, Journal of Urban Design, 11/1/2004

"With 'Mega-Projects,' Altshuler and Luberoff have made a timely and useful contribution to a highly topical debate. In particular, urban planners, transport planners and political scientists, be they academics or practitioners, will appreciate this book." —Luca Bertolini, University of Amsterdam, Journal of Housing and the Built Environment

"MEGA-PROJECTS insightfully blends urban political theory with detailed case studies to arrive at a new understanding of large public works projects in America. Altshuler and Luberoff take on pork barrel politics, the complexities of federalism, the ambiguous role of technical analysis, and the rise of environmental and community activism to create a landmark study of lasting value to planners, engineers, policy analysts, and politicians. " —Martin Wachs, University of California, Berkeley

"A sophisticated history of public investment in American urban areas during the past half-century, framed within an equally sophisticated review of urban political theory. Its meticulous presentation of factual detail is cast within the larger setting where public policy shapes large-scale public works, and public works in turn help shape urban history." —Melvin M. Webber, University of California Transportation Research Center

In-depth analysis of urban rojects and their prospects for the future
By Don G. Schley
Altschuler and Luberoff provide an in-depth analysis of urban mega-projects focusing on three major categories: highways, airports, and rail transit. They preface their treatment a first-rate discussion and analysis of the theoretical framework and evolving political context in which urban mega-projects are undertaken. In this sense, the book is invaluable for those persons in the project management sector who need to be able to deal with the politics of their own projects (despite the ongoing belief among students that politics are irrelevant to project success). The real driver of these projects is the demand for economic growth and prosperity by important political constituencies, particularly the business communities of these various cities, but also other groups (including neighborhoods and other local institutions) that are interested in promoting prosperity as well. The discussion here is balanced, thoughtful, informed and astute.

The authors detail the era of carte-blanche and laissez-faire mega projects which lasted into the late 1960s, only to be confronted with resistance to groups (such as neighborhoods and environmentalists) that had heretofore been shut own, silenced, or overlooked. They treat the seventies, eighties and nineties as a time of retrenchment, and see the present era as one in which mega-projects will continue to drive forward in specific areas, but in which they will also be far more limited in scope than in the preceding years. They note the constraining force of the "do no harm" doctrine, and detail how this doctrine--promulgated as a consequence of the excesses of the mega-projects of the sixties, when neighborhood and environmental impacts were hardly ever considered (e.g., the ill-fated Jones Falls Expressway in Baltimore, which the book does not mention)--is being implemented in projects such as the Federal government's reconstruction and expansion of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on Washington DC's southern edge.

The book ends with an analysis of the long-term impact of the legal retrenchment against mega-projects that occurred during the sixties, and its authors, while sympathetic with the democratic political tendencies generated by the opposition to these projecs, concludes that legitimate objections can still stop projects. Simple use of delaying tactics will not work, and projects will advance against such opposition, though far more slowly and with greatly increased costs.

Their discussion of regime politics is especially important, and provides and essential caveat for any serious professional or activist seeking to halt a politically advanced, though publicly deleterious project.

Arab and Arab American Feminisms: Gender, Violence, and Belonging (Gender, Culture, and Politics in the Middle East)From Brand: Syracuse

In this collection, Arab and Arab American feminists enlist their intimate experiences to challenge simplistic and long-held assumptions about gender, sexuality, and commitments to feminism and justice-centered struggles among Arab communities. Contributors hail from multiple geographical sites, spiritualities, occupations, sexualities, class backgrounds, and generations. Poets, creative writers, artists, scholars, and activists employ a mix of genres to express feminist issues and highlight how Arab and Arab American feminist perspectives simultaneously inhabit multiple, overlapping, and intersecting spaces: within families and communities; in anticolonial and antiracist struggles; in debates over spirituality and the divine; within radical, feminist, and queer spaces; in academia and on the street; and among each other.
Contributors explore themes as diverse as the intersections between gender, sexuality, Orientalism, racism, Islamophobia, and Zionism, and the restoration of Arab Jews to Arab American histories. This book asks how members of diasporic communities navigate their sense of belonging when the country in which they live wages wars in the lands of their ancestors. Arab and Arab American Feminisms opens up new possibilities for placing grounded Arab and Arab American feminist perspectives at the center of gender studies, Middle East studies, American studies, and ethnic studies.

this is a collection of articles that reflects on the state of arab american women. it is so informative. it explains every aspect related to the lives of arab american women. it even connects the idea of their oppression and their struggle to the struggle of african american women. it also explain the similarities and differences between arab femininsm and arab american feminisms. it is an excellent, thorough reference that the writers took a lot of pain to write. it includes many forms of writings but the whole book can be categorized as personal essay. it is worth every cent.

Id give it a zero if I could
By Loren Brauner
I don't know how ANYONE can write a book about Arab feminism and not talk about female genital mutilation, honor killings, the practive of marrying of little girls to old men, or the imprisonment of women in their homes who may not leave without a male overseer. Yet- She devotes a section to Israel as if this tiny country of a few million people who are mostly not arab or Muslim is somehow in Abdulhadi's mind more relevant to Arab feminism than the abuses and spread of sharia through Muslim and traditionally non-Muslim lands alike. Also absent is reference to facial acid burnings, a common "punishment" for a woman who dares refuse an overture and sometimes even between spouses, as is the common practice of the judiciary killing a woman for adultery when she attempts to report a rape and the predictably high levels of unreported rape in those countries. The sad desperation of women who involve themselves in terrorism, naively hoping that their 'sacrifice' will make them "equal to a man" in the eyes of Islam. There are many evils of colonization, but the plight of women in the Muslim world, which transcends economic lines is not one of them, that is a beast of the cultures own doing. In going through this book I found myself repeatedly asking why she wrote it at all. It's certainly not addressing any of the sources of oppression in women's lives, nor does it offer a plan to rally around to improve the female situation. She is here in cushey US, and when she does go back it is as a celebrity, so she doesn't have to face and live under that oppression. If you want a good book on Arab feminism Jan Goodwin's "The Price of Honor" is more informative and has more integrity. It's written in the 90's but nothing much has improved since then, if anything, it's gotten worse as sharia has spread to oppress women who previously knew at least some levels of freedom and personhood. The response of an autocratic nation's armed forces is crucial to the outcome of democratization movements throughout the world. But what exact internal conditions have led to real-world democratic transitions, and have external forces helped or hurt? Here, experts with military and policy backgrounds, some of whom have played a role in democratic transitions, present instructive case studies of democratic movements. Focusing on the specific domestic context and the many influences that have contributed to successful transitions, the authors write about democratic civil-military relations in fourteen countries and five world regions. The cases include Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Lebanon, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Syria, and Thailand, augmented by regional overviews of Asia, Europe, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa.

Excellent insight into America's potential role in shaping foreign leaders
By Bob Parda
While the readership is somewhat limited to those who have an interest in the relationship between the military and leaders of developing nations, ADM Blair provides fascinating insight into how democratic countries such as the U.S. can influence the direction of these countries and their leaders and how we can affect their future growth in a positive manner. Case studies of countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines provides a glimpse of what we have done right in an era where we are too quick to forget the appeal that America still possesses. This book is an ideal text for anyone seeking to understand how we can still hold high our standards and hope that they will be a beacon for others to follow. Blair is uniquely qualified to address these issues.

The International Politics of the Persian Gulf (Modern Intellectual and Political History of the Middle East), by Mehran Kamrava

For much of the contemporary history of the Middle East, the Persian Gulf has stood at the center of the region’s strategic significance. At the same time, the Gulf has been wracked by political instability and tension. As far back as the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Britain zeroed in on the Persian Gulf as a critical passageway to its crown jewel, India, and entered into protectorate agreements with local ruling families, thus bestowing on them international legitimacy and, eventually, the resources and support necessary to ascend to kingships. Today, the region is undergoing profound changes that range from rapid economic and infrastructural development to tumultuous social and cultural transformations. Far from eroding the area’s political significance, these changes have only accentuated rivalries and tensions and have brought to the forefront new challenges to international security and stability.

Together, the essays in this volume present a comprehensive, detailed, and accessible account of the international politics of the region. Focusing on the key factors that give the Persian Gulf its strategic significance, contributors look at the influence of vast deposits of oil and natural gas on international politics, the impact of the competing centers of power of Iran and Saudi Arabia, the nature of relationships among countries within the Persian Gulf, and the evolving interaction between Islam and politics. Throughout the collection, issues of internal and international security are shown to be central.

Drawing on the comprehensive knowledge and experience of experts in the region, The International Politics of the Persian Gulf shines a bright light on this area, offering insights and thoughtful analyses on the critical importance of this troubled region to global politics.

Haunting Legacy: Vietnam and the American Presidency from Ford to Obama, by Marvin Kalb, Deborah Kalb

The United States had never lost a war—that is, until 1975, when it was forced to flee Saigon in humiliation after losing to what Lyndon Johnson called a "raggedy-ass little fourth-rate country." The legacy of this first defeat has haunted every president since, especially on the decision of whether to put "boots on the ground" and commit troops to war.

In Haunting Legacy, the father-daughter journalist team of Marvin Kalb and Deborah Kalb presents a compelling, accessible, and hugely important history of presidential decisionmaking on one crucial issue: in light of the Vietnam debacle, under what circumstances should the United States go to war?

The sobering lesson of Vietnam is that the United States is not invincible—it can lose a war—and thus it must be more discriminating about the use of American power. Every president has faced the ghosts of Vietnam in his own way, though each has been wary of being sucked into another unpopular war. Ford (during the Mayaguez crisis) and both Bushes (Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan) deployed massive force, as if to say, "Vietnam, be damned." On the other hand, Carter, Clinton, and Reagan (to the surprise of many) acted with extreme caution, mindful of the Vietnam experience. Obama has also wrestled with the Vietnam legacy, using doses of American firepower in Libya while still engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The authors spent five years interviewing hundreds of officials from every post war administration and conducting extensive research in presidential libraries and archives, and they've produced insight and information never before published. Equal parts taut history, revealing biography, and cautionary tale, Haunting Legacy is must reading for anyone trying to understand the power of the past to influence war-and-peace decisions of the present, and of the future.

Review

"What a terrific book! Scrupulously researched and beautifully told, Haunting Legacy proves that try as they might, our past seven presidents have—one after the next— failed to exorcize the ghost of Vietnam. From Ford to Obama…each one has seen the Vietnam War intrude on his campaigns (think draft dodging and swift boating) and his decisionmaking (think military action). It's a fresh look at late 20th/early 21stcentury American history."—Lesley Stahl, correspondent for 60 Minutes

"The ghost of the Vietnam War has influenced and haunted two generations of American policymakers. Now, a brilliant two-generation team looks at that legacy in an insightful and fascinating way. This is great narrative history and biography combined to create informative case studies."—Walter Isaacson

, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute

"By God, we've kicked the Vietnam syndrome,' crowed President George H. W. Bush when he repelled Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991. He was wrong. The Vietnam debacle continues to haunt America's political leaders, military men, and population. Marvin Kalb and Deborah Kalb's account of this phenomenon is studiously researched, vividly narrated, and, above all, highly readable. It will stand as a major contribution to the subject."—Stanley Karnow, author of Vietnam: A History, winner of the Pulitzer Prize

"More than three decades after its end, the Vietnam War continues to influence American attitudes toward sending troops abroad. In readable prose, the Kalbs's book skillfully and perceptively analyzes this haunting legacy from the administration of Gerald Ford to that of Barack Obama."—George C. Herring, author, America's Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975

"Vietnam continues to be an albatross, circling the White House. In a compelling and totally accessible book, the Kalbs (father and daughter) show how profoundly America's defeat in Vietnam has affected one U.S. administration after another, over the course of the past thirty-six years. If you wonder whether Vietnam still matters, it does. Read this book and discover why and how."—Ted Koppel, anchor of ABC's Nightline for twenty-five years

" Haunting Legacy is a gripping, fascinating account of how the Vietnam War has lived on in the psyches of our national leaders and put its stamp on our foreign policy ever since. This powerful and insightful book shows us how that long and painful war has never really ended in Washington."—Elizabeth Drew, political journalist

"In this masterful work of historical reflection combined with good old-fashioned reporting and research, the Kalbs remind us how the shadow of losing a war influenced a president's choices on subsequent interventions. The chapters on Obama and Afghanistan poignantly remind us that perhaps the most dangerous form of human error is forgetting what one is trying to achieve. Haunting Legacy should be required reading for all occupants of the White House and every presidential aspirant."—Larry Berman, author of Lyndon Johnson's War: The Road to Stalemate in Vietnam and No Peace, No Honor: Nixon, Kissinger and Betrayal in Vietnam

Excellent Analysis
By Gary Westhoff
The authors chronicle how Vietnam Syndrome affected the foreign policies of Presidents Ford to Obama. Therefore, not all foreign policy "events" from these administrations are addressed: there is no discussion of Iran-Contra, for example. I was skeptical of this work, concerned that the thesis was forced and contrived. For the vast majority of the book, this is a potential problem that is avoided, due largely to careful selection of specific foreign policy decisions (see above). There is little if any original, earth-shattering research, but it's concise, analytical, and meaningful. Unless one is a historian or reads historical journals, the book is full of insights. For example, there is fascinating discussion of Reagan's uniquely complicated relationship with Cap Weinberger. It's definitely worth a read if you're interested in this general topic.

Engaging and informative
By Happy Peds
For a non-reader of historical and political books, this informative, engaging, beautifully researched book engaged my attention. When I finished reading the book I had a greater understanding of how the Vietnam war has affected and continues to affect American politics.

The book makes one reflect as to why the USA continues to sacrifice young lives and invest such a large amount of funds in wars such as (currently) the one in Afghanistan. Have we not learned from what happened in Vietnam?

The Still-Haunting Legacy of America in Vietnam, Sixty Years On
By William B. Jones
For Americans come of age during the Vietnam war, there was "Fire in the Lake" to inform what was at hand. For those wondering what the war meant for America a decade later, there was "Backfire." For those wondering about its continuing costs to the country, and hence the world, "Haunting Legacy" provides keen insight.

You don't have to have served in Vietnam to have had your life influenced by the politics of America's war there. In fact, it may be that this book is particulary important for the majority of Americans now living who were born after the draft for that "police action" ended. If you don't think the remnants of Vietnam lingered in the thinking of every president since then, read on.

Tel Aviv: Mythography of a City (Space, Place and Society), by Maoz Azaryahu

Founded in 1909 as a "garden suburb" of the Mediterranean port of Jaffa, Tel Aviv soon became a model of Jewish self-rule and was celebrated as a jewel in the crown of Hebrew revival. Over time the city has transformed into a lively metropolis, renowned for its architecture and culture, openness and vitality. A young city about to celebrate its 100th anniversity, the mythic Tel Aviv continues to represent a fundamental idea that transcends the physical texture of the city and the everyday experiences of its residents.

Combining historical research and cultural analysis, Maoz Azaryahu explores the different myths that have been part of the vernacular and perception of the city. He relates Tel Aviv's mythology to its physicality through buildings, streets, personal experiences, and municipal policies. With critical insight, he evaluates specific myths and their propagation in the spheres of both official and popular culture.

Azaryahu explores three distinct stages in the history of the mythic Tel Aviv: "The First Hebrew City" assesses Tel Aviv as Zionist vision and seed of the actual city; "Non-Stop City" depicts trendy, global post-Zionist Tel Aviv; and "The White City" describes Tel Aviv's architectural landscape, created in the 1930s and imbued with nostalgia and local prestige. Tel Aviv: Mythography of a City will appeal to urban geographers, cultural historians, scholars of myth, and students of Israeli society and culture.

What is Tel Aviv really about?
By Eric Maroney
In Tel Aviv, Mythography of a City, Maoz Azaryahu sets out to answer this question. As the subtitle suggests, Azaryahu seeks to answer this through the mythological perspective of Tel Aviv as the "First Hebrew City," taking the reader through the successive stages of Tel Aviv's history, and most importantly, how that history was interpreted by various sectors of the Tel Avivian/Israeli public. As a city founded on sand, a kind of literal and metaphorical blank slate, this work illustrates how conceptions of place are molded largely from the stories people tell of it, and how they transform over time. Tel Aviv, as a city created ex nihilo, became a canvas on which the Zionist experiment could assume various guises, in particular that of the "normal" international metropolis, wholly secular in its outlook, as opposed to a Jerusalem steeped in tradition. Azaryahu's uses relavant sources and traces an interesting history of a fascinating city.

The Symbolism of Tel Aviv
By Yaakov Ben Shalom
This book is not a straightforward history of Tel Aviv. Instead, it is about what Tel Aviv has symbolized over the years and how people have thought of Tel Aviv or conceptualized it over the last century. Themes include the "First Hebrew City"; the city built on sand; an urban, capitalist, sophisticated Zionist model (no kibbutzim here!); the role of the beach; the Bauhaus architecture; a non-stop city; a place for secular Israelis to gather as a community; and the contrast with Jerusalem among other topics.

You do not have to know Tel Aviv personally to understand this book, but it does help. I had to read it for a class, and most students in the class had not been to Israel, but they still got the book. And enough background on the city's history was provided that another, supplementary book was not necessary.

The book was much better written than I expected. Since it is about symbolism and theory and since the author is an Israeli professor, I was concerned that it would be laden with impenetrable academic prose and post-modern jargon. It wasn't. For the most part, it was perfectly readable (though there were a few rough spots in the translation). If the reader is NOT looking for a traditional founding-to-present history of the city and wants something a little more abstract, this is a good choice.
