This book provides a remarkable glimpse into the rich history of the Hudson River Valley and Upstate New York into Canada through the lens of the Quakers. Formerly a prominent religion in New York State ranking third at the beginning of the 19th century, New York Quakers have had a leading role in education, prison reform, women's rights, peace activism and temperance. The chapters on the 19th century are particularly rich in fascinating details while the 20th century material is a little more general.

In December 1991 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics—born in violent revolution and dominated for more than six decades by highly authoritarian rule—was dissolved by its constituent republics. The causes for this remarkable event will be probed for many years to come. Our understanding of it may never be complete. Nevertheless, it is evident even now that part of the story lay in a conscious redirection of policy by specific individuals. Those at the center of political and economic power understood the flaws in their system well enough to initiate a process of reform, but one that triggered a more massive transformation than they had intended.

The process has left enormous turmoil in this wake. Political power has dissipated in all the new states emerging from the fragmented former USSR, and all are struggling to establish some constitutional order. They do so under conditions of severe austerity as they seed to reconstruct their once integrated, highly concentrated, internationally isolated economy into independent instruments of national viability. With no detailed blueprint available, and with only fractured mechanisms of policy control at their disposal, these new nations are being carried along by the inertia of state enterprises and by a spontaneous process or regeneration at the grass-roots level.

This book, which analyzes Gorbachev's foreign economic strategy, provides a window for understanding the disintegrative forces that stymied his reforms and eventually defeated him, undermining the country he sought to preserve. Gorbachev was committed to ending Soviet isolation from the world economy and at the same time saving Soviet socialism. Ironically, it is the destruction of Soviet socialism and the emergence of new post-Soviet states, that has begun to break down the isolationist barriers erected over the last seven decades. This book documents the incredibly complex legacies that Russia and the other new post-Soviet states face as they see to integrate themselves into the global economy.

About the Author

Paul C. Light is the Paulette Goddard Professor of Public Service at New York University. He is also Douglas Dillon Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, where he founded the Center for Public Service. Sneaky, Ill-Researched, & Dishonest Attack on Libertarianism?

Many readers will feel that the author attacks Libertarianism without clearly mentioning it, often claiming for coercive government the voluntary achievements of private persons or Libertarians. This seems to be a growing trend. From the above review of things coercive 'Big Government' achieved:

After fanatics for big-governments wrecked it? Most work was done by private individuals, many of the coerced government programs backfired

No. The March of Dimes voluntary campaign of contributions cleared the path for the vaccine and public awareness, itself a private invention. Over-quick vaccination efforts of the government produced backfiring vaccines.

No. Libertarians on the ground led the peaceful fall of Communism--hey wait, isn't Communism an example of wonderful big government bringing us to a 'stateless society'? Yeltsin, Zhang, Vaclav Klaus and the leader of the Mongolian anti-communist revolt were all proud L/libertarians.

Charles T. Gehring is the director of the New Netherland Project with the New York State Library and the coeditor of numerous collections of original documents from Dutch New Netherland. William A. Starna is a professor emeritus of anthropology at the State University of New York College at Oneonta and a coeditor of "Iroquois Journey: An Anthropologist Remembers" (Nebraska 2007). Gehring and Starna coedited "A Journey into Mohawk and Oneida Country, 1634-1635: The Journal of Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert "and (with Dean R. Snow) "In Mohawk Country: Early Narratives of a Native People," Diederik Willem Goedhuys is a native of the Netherlands and thirty year resident of South Africa. In addition to having knowledge of Dutch, Afrikaans, and English at his disposal, he also spent several months at the New Netherland Project in Albany, New York, where he had access to the best reference sources for the translation of a seventeenth-century publication.

Fascinating, well done translations

This volume catalogs a wide range of documents from twenty-two years of Fort Orange's records. The documents are clearly translated with useful notes (including notes on the translation) and excellent indices. The records show deeds transferring property, documents relating to debts of people associated with the settlement, and official (often quasi-official) correspondence. The indices are very useful, and the editor makes a number of useful comments on possible name variations.

I would very highly recommend this as educational source material for students learning how to use primary material. Also good for people doing genealogical work.
