About the Author

Hollie Russon Gilman served as policy adviser on open government and innovation in the Obama White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. She is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar atColumbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and a fellow at New America and Harvard's Ash Center for Democratic Innovation andGovernance. 

She holds a PhD from Harvard's Department of Government and AB from the University of Chicago in Political Science.  She is a Fulbright and AAAS Fellowship recipient and has served as an advisor and research consultant to leading organizations including the Case Foundation, Center for Global Development, Google.org, Open Society Foundation, and World Bank Institute.

He gives particular attention to the aftermath and "afterlife" of the crisis and to its bearing on current and future policy. In the first edition of the book in 1987 the Garthoff presented a number of facts for the first time. Since then, more information has become available, particularly form Soviet sources, in part from conferences in which Garthoff participated but even more from individual interviews and research. This new information, much of it presented here in this volume for the first time, helps to fill in gaps in our knowledge about events and motivations on the Soviet side. More importantly, it enlarges our understanding of the crisis interaction.

Albert Schweitzer's (1875-1965) system of ethical mysticism is based primarily upon Christ's injunction, "Love the Lord thy God first and thy neighbor as thyself." He writes, "I can do no other than be reverent before everything that is called life. That is the beginning and foundation of all ethics." Assembled by Meyer (Bible & Christian studies, Chapman Univ.) and the late Bergel (emeritus, Chapman Univ.), founder of the Albert Schweitzer Institute, this eclectic collection of essays is intended as both an appreciation of Schweitzer and a critical review of his ethics and metaphysics. Included here are papers from the 1999 conference "Albert Schweitzer at the Turn of the Millennium," snippets of letters from Schweitzer and his wife-to-be, as well as a sermon, a childhood memoir, and several important essays by Schweitzer. The book also contains an introduction to Jainism (owing to its related ethic of nonviolence and reverence for life) and several undergraduate essays. Those without an in-depth understanding of Schweitzer's pacifistic yet sometimes sentimental and subjective processes will struggle with the many dissonant voices here, but Schweitzer scholars might find a few items of merit. The included writings are authored by everyone from Graduate students to correspondents and Albert Schweitzer himself. Very enjoyable reading.

Albert Schweitzer is a human being far ahead of his time and also a human being for all time: a shining light one of the darkest periods of history. This book makes clear why every person, young and old, should be exposed to his brilliant mind and his multiple gifts so readily shared with all humankind. I wish it could become required reading, especially for the young and impressionable.

This book, a compendium of sermons and artucles by Dr. Albert S , s a brilliant ethical and moral foundation for Right & Wrong as well as for the value of Life as a Holy, Sacred Gift frim Almighty God. It is MUST reading for every H.S. and college student in America because our Founders, including Franklin & Jefferson placed Life as God's Number One, Cardinal Gift to Mankind. Dr. Albert gives us all much divine wisdom as a pastor, scholar, philosopher, scientist and physician. Our broken, impotent western system of medicine would be much better off if this system of Ethical Thinking was adopted and followed instead of one driven by greed, power and Big Pharmacy politics and money.

Written by John Rennie Short (Professor of Geography and Public Policy, University of Michigan), Alabaster Cities: Urban U.S. Since 1950 is an in-depth, scholarly study of urban America since 1950, with especial focus on "urban renewal" that all too often demolished working-class city zones that were not slums, failed to provide adequate public housing, and therefore left too many poor and lower-income people with no place to go; the positives and negatives of increasing suburbanization; and political and social fallout from changing urban and suburban dynamics. Though serious-minded, drawing heavily on research, and careful not to mistake correlation for causation (are suburbs often more conservative politically because conservatives tend to move there, or because life there tends to give residents a more conservative perspective?), Alabaster Cities is thoroughly accessible to lay readers as well as scholarly readers. Highly recommended.
