Beyond NIMBY: Hazardous Waste Siting in Canada and the United States, by Barry Rabe

The virtual inability to open new hazardous waste management facilities in Canada and the United States stems directly from a form of community opposition so common and vehement that it is commonly identified as a syndrome: Not In My Back Yard (or NIMBY). Whether such facilities are proposed by governmental agencies or by private waste management firms, communities are usually shocked to learn that they have been selected to host these facilities and take collective action to thwart them. Such actions have blocked many poorly planned facilities and stimulated greater interest in preventive, waste reduction strategies. They have also, however, thwarted the adoption of new waste management technologies and created serious geographic inequities in the distribution of waste management responsibility across the two nations. Beyond NIMBY examines positive alternatives to prevailing approaches to siting and the familiar NIMBY outcomes. In particular, it shows that certain siting strategies in Canadian provinces and American states have created successful siting agreements, broad public support, and comprehensive systems of waste management and prevention. These strategies include continuous public involvement in waste policy deliberations, a commitment to pursue siting only among communities that volunteer after extended democratic dialogue, and extensive packages of economic compensation and assurances of safe, long-term facility management. Equally important are guarantees that any new facility will be only part of a broader waste strategy for a particular province, state, or region and will not be allowed to become a magnet for wastes from areas that have not taken serious steps to address their own waste problems. The book concludes with the suggestion that these strategies can be applied to other NIMBY-blocked proposals, such as siting for prisons, drug and alcohol treatment centers, and nursing homes. "Rabe's book should contribute to the ongoing debate over hazardous waste facility siting. His lucid and convincing cases provide a meaningful starting point to push the level of debate beyond atheoretical anecdotes of success and failure."—Publius

Globaphobia: Confronting Fears about Open Trade, by Gary Burtless, Robert Z. Lawrence, Robert E. Litan, Robert J. Shapiro

For much of the post-World War II period, the increasing globalization of the U.S. economy was welcomed by policymakers and by the American people. We gained the benefits of cheaper and, in some cases, better foreign-made products, while U.S. firms gained wider access to foreign markets. The increasing economic interlinkages with the rest of the world helped promote capitalism and democracy around the globe. Indeed, we helped "win" the Cold War by trading and investing with the rest of the world, in the process demonstrating to all concerned the virtues of trade and markets. In recent years, however, a growing chorus of complaints has been lodged against globalization--which is blamed for costing American workers their jobs and lowering their wages. The authors of this book speak directly and simply to these concerns, demonstrating with easy prose and illustrations why the "globaphobes" are wrong. Globalization has not cost the United States jobs. Nor has it played any more than a small part in the disappointing trends in wages of many American workers. The challenge for all Americans is to embrace globalization and all of the benefits it brings, while adopting targeted policies to ease the very real pain of those few Americans whom globalization may harm. Globaphobia outlines a novel, yet sensible program for advancing this objective. Copublished with the Twentieth Century Fund and the Progressive Policy Institute

Review

"There will be many other books that treat these and similar subjects.... But it is difficult to imagine that there will be many better or more stimulating than [GLOBAPHOBIA]. The issues [GLOBAPHOBIA] raise[s] are the right ones. The solutions [it] suggest[s]... are equally correct." —Albert Fishlow, International Finance, 2:2, 1999

"Globaphobia deftly dissects the anti-trade arguments currently in vogue. An important book at an important time in the continuing debate over America's international posture. " —James A. Baker, III, Former Secretary of State

"GLOBAPHOBIA knocks down the myths and misconceptions that too often cloud discourse concerning our increasing economic linkages with the rest of the world. The authors skillfully and impartially present data which establish that Americans overwhelmingly benefit from globalization through higher wages and better jobs.... This highly readable handbook is a welcome addition for citizens interested in policies that enhance their economic well-being, and it should be required reading for all legislators." —Carla A. Hills, Former U.S. Trade Representative

The Very First Book To Read on Globalization
By A Customer
The ease of reading is exceptional. If you are worried about your limited understanding in economics and especially international trade, this is the book for you. In addition to the book being written and edited to be understood by nearly any modestly educated person it is further advantaged by authors that clearly understand the subject in great depth. As is so often the case the extremely well informed can write with such clarity for the lay reader.
As nearly all economists understand net trade flows always equal net investment flows. Shockingly large numbers of media and congressmen do not understand this utterly simple formula. In a nut shell, with all the foreign money pouring into the USA treasuries market, stock market and direct business investments over the last several decades, it follows that the USA would run trade deficits equal to the net investment inflow over the same period. If you do not understand this or you want an ultra easy review of these simple facts, this book was made for you. In a grand gesture of national service these authors wrote the book that was needed for general understanding of what positive and negative points globalization means to the USA. It is not designed for academic kudos.
If every modestly educated voter would read this book, the future of the USA and the world would be significantly brightened. While this is a pipe dream, at least read this book before you say one more word about globalization otherwise you may embarrass your self in the presence of informed people. If you are informed on economics please forgive my heavy handedness. It is not meant for you. This is a critical issue for underdeveloped nations and the mature nations, there is so much to be gained by informed voters on this subject.
This book is carefully grounded in the proven principals of economics. While a reviewer or two gives an impression to the contrary, decades of reading in economics provides me the confidence to assure you that this book is profoundly well grounded. At each point where scholars may differ the authors and editors have carefully laid out its discussion. This is not a book written with a liberal or conservative bent. Modern economics encompasses a significant degree of science and mathematical logic. To view this book as otherwise, is to be illogical or unwilling to accept the most basic proven equations. Again you will not find an easier more meaningful book to read on economics.
The USA economy for a variety of reasons has sharply declining need for workers without a high school education and places a continuing rising premium on post college education. Increasingly, those that can graduate from the elite institutions lead nearly a charmed life in the USA. Immigrants that are able to enter the USA with limited education are having increasing difficulty as the decades roll by. It is not clear that globalization is a meaningful factor in placing the such great educational needs on the American worker. This book helps frame the questions that might be asked about the rising importance of education in the USA. The book being about globalization does not dwell on this issue, but it does strongly suggest that the potential understanding of this issue of the exponentially rising need for superior knowledge is much broader than the globalization trend.
The most provocative theme in the latter chapters of the book is the impact of globalization on those American workers that are poorly educated. The adverse impacts on this group comes from rapid technology changes, defective educational system, ineffective governmental assistance and to a very small degree open trade. The authors documentation about how little negative impact foreign trade has on a very limited number of workers is shocking. A source of another worthy book would be to provide a more exhaustive review of this aspect. The authors conclude that the popular obsession on this point should treated with a reorganized aggressive worker assistance program. Almost any reasonable assistance program would be a modest cost relative to the diverse and powerful benefits that all the rest of Americans get from open trade according to the authors.
The authors are very negative on the effectiveness of government sponsored retraining. The book is highly critical of the governments ability to define injured parties in open trade without it being a political football. The authors suggest an assistance program that is indiscriminate as to the cause of worker misfortune and focuses on programs that show imperial evidence of effectiveness. The focal point is intermediate assistance for any lower income workers need to find new employment. While the left and the right quarrel about where to draw the line, the authors contend that so few people are in need relative to the benefits of open trade that just focusing on a well designed assistance program would make all the difference in giving support and comfort to the aggrieved relative to the huge benefits of open trade.

A little gem
By M. Mcfarland
Globaphobia is a great little text on the benefits of free trade. If only some of those protesting about the evils of capitalism actually took the time to educate themselves. They might then see that everyone benefits from free trade; developing countries have more jobs and developed countries higher real wages; consumers everywhere get greater choice.
There will always be losers - as the book makes clear. But that's a fact of life whichever economic creed you follow. There are significantly fewer losers in Asia now that forty years of economic liberalisation have raised income levels from paddy field to first world standards. This book explains why - in crisp simple terms.

Stimulating ideas on globalization and the U. S. economy.
By A Customer
An effective presentation of the positive and sometimes negative effects that open world trade has on the U. S. economy. It suggests thought-provoking ideas on how the United States and other national economies can ease the negative effects of globalization on their less-educated or poorly-prepared working populations. Our consulting staff recommends this publication as "semi-relaxed" reading when you are ready to let your mind roam and consider new ideas. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute

Humor and Nonviolent Struggle in Serbia (Syracuse Studies on Peace and Conflict Resolution), by Janjira Sombatpoonsiri

“If I had no sense of humor, I should long ago have committed suicide,” wrote
the late Mahatma Gandhi, expressing the potent power of humor to sustain and
uplift. Less obvious is humor’s ability to operate as a cunning weapon in nonviolent
protest movements. Over the last few decades, activists are increasingly
incorporating subversive laughter in their protest repertoires, realizing the ways
in which it challenges the ruling elite’s propaganda, defuses antagonism, and
inspires both participants and the greater population.
In this highly original and engaging work, Sombatpoonsiri explores the
nexus between humor and nonviolent protest, aiming to enhance our understanding
of the growing popularity of humor in protest movements around the
world. Drawing on insights from the pioneering Otpor activists in Serbia, she
provides a detailed account of the protesters’ systematic use of humor to topple
Slobadan Miloševic’ in 2000. Interviews with activists, protest newsletters, and
documentaries of the movement combine to illustrate how humor played a pivotal
role by reflecting the absurdity of the regime’s propaganda and, in turn, by
delegitimizing its authority. Sombatpoonsiri highlights the Otpor activists’ ability
to internationalize their nonviolent crusade, influencing youth movements in the
Ukraine, Georgia, Iran, and Egypt. Globally, Otpor’s successful use of humor
became an inspiration for a later generation of protest movements.

Review
Sombatpoonsiri has now given us reason to laugh as we topple dictators, chuckle as we contemplate new strategies, and make jokes as we outwit oppressors….Sombatpoonsiri's work should be studied by all who yearn for a nonviolent way to bring down repressive regimes. (Tom H. Hastings, assistant professor of conflict resolution, Portland State University)

The book, a fantastic adventure in crossing boundaries, reminds us how remembering and understanding nonviolent experiences in Serbia could empower nonviolent struggles elsewhere in the world. (Chaiwat Satha-Anand, professor of political science, Thammasat University)

Sombatpoonsiri challenges the myth that humor is the language of the powerless-a meaningless expression of frustration that rarely amounts to change. Instead, drawing on the case of the Serbian uprising against Miloševic, she persuasively argues that humor can have truly subversive effects and can be a crucial form of power for movements. A timely, insightful, and entertaining read! (Erica Chenoweth, associate professor at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver)

In this lively and empathetic study, the first serious look at Otpor in English, Janjira Sombatpoonsiri delivers the sophisticated analysis that the main agent of the Serbian Revolution of 2000 deserves. (Padraic Kenney, Professor of History and International Studies, Indiana University)

An original and useful contribution, drawing both on existing literature
and documentary sources as well as on interviews with participants.
It has the potential to advance understanding of the role of
humor and satirical stances in the generation of political change. (Eric Gordy, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College, London)

About the Author
Janjira Sombatpoonsiri is lecturer of political science at Thammasat University in Thailand.

"She's all my fancy painted her, she's lovely, she is light. She waltzes on the waves by day and rests with me at night. But I had nothing to do with her painting. The man who built her did that. And I commence with the canoe because that is about the first thing you need on entering the Northern Wilderness." Thus opened Nessmuk's first commissioned "letter" for Forest and Stream in 1880. For years thereafter, George Washington Sears, under the penname Nessmuk, contributed a glorious series of pieces on canoeing the Adirondacks, exploring rivers and streams, climbing the many mountains and peaks, and chronicling his long relationship with one of the greatest canoe builders, J. Henry Rushton.

From Library Journal
Sears traveled the byways of New York State's Adirondack region in the late 1800s, penning these "letters" for publication in Forest and Stream under the nom de plume Nessmuk. This revision of the original 1962 edition corrects some biographical errors and updates and adds new material. This is a must for outdoor as well as New York history collections.

Excellent Journal of 1880's travel through the Adirondacks
By Thomas S. Speer
This is a compilation of stories written by George Washington Sears (a.k.a. Nessmuk) for Forest and Stream Magazine in the years 1880-1883. He paddled different custom built ultralight Rushton canoes each year, starting south of present day Old Forge, through the Fulton Chain to Raquette and reaching as far as Long Lake, Little Tupper Lake and beyond. His chronicles are enjoyable, easily readable tales of life and travel in the wilderness of the 1880's Adirondacks. It is full of details which are interesting to the student of Adirondack history. For instance, he allowed me to pinpoint the year of construction of the Grove Hotel (later known as the Deerland Hotel) on Long Lake, and to give me background on it's original owner.

Light and Slight Adventurer in the Wild
By Kaiyaque
I admit it: I am an addict for tales of the woods from the 19th century. Nessmuk, the pen name of George Washington Sears, was a most unlikely spokesman of the wild. Slight of build and racked with the consumption that weakened and eventually killed him, he nonetheless spent weeks and months exploring solo the waterways of both the Adirondacks and his native Pennsylvania.
This tome is made up of several letters he wrote for publication in the magazine "Forest and Stream." The magazine was a very highly regarded sporting magazine of the late 19th century, including "We Seized Our Rifles," a collection of tales from the West, a number of which were taken from the magazine.
Because of his small stature and weakness, Sears was an early proponent of traveling light, ordering a series of ever-lighter wooden canoes, culminating in the "Sairy Gamp," which weighed in at a scarcely believable ten and a half pounds. With rifle and fishing kit, Sears lived off the land in a way that even then was becoming less possible in the eastern wilds.
This book makes an excellent winter read while you are preparing for the coming season's adventures. Also see my review of a book that was inspired by Nessmuk's adventures, "Adirondack Passage, "by Christine Jerome. She and her husband followed in Sears' wake in modern boats that were also made with an eye to extreme lightness.

Charming and Surprisingly Readable
By Richard R. Powell
This slim collection of letters originally published in Field and Stream magazine is a record of canoe trips taken over several years by the plucky old woodsman George Washington Sears. Each year he used a different feather-light canoe made of thin strips of wood, mostly cedar, which were believed by their maker, J. Henry Rushton, to be so insubstantial as to afford little or no room for mishap on Sear's long journeys. Sears himself, despite his obvious pride in the delicate crafts, and despite his great pleasure in showing them off to anyone and everyone who was interested, never the less referred to them quite often as `egg shells'. The journey's consisted of paddling and portaging hundreds of miles, mostly by himself, from lake to lake in the Adirondack wilderness, an area that is now a state park but that at the time was a booming recreation destination for hunters, fishermen, and sufferers of consumption.

The letters range from a very entertaining description of a "typical" guided tour of the lakes, to straight forward descriptions of the landscape, to complaints about the hardships of wilderness travel, and to Sear's own feelings on land management. After 120 years the letters still read remarkably well. The simple prose reveals a voice old in experience and timeless in convivial honesty. It is not difficult to imagine yourself paddling alongside the slight, almost fragile, elder as he idles away his time fishing and exploring lake after lake.

Some things are lacking in his reports, noticeable details omitted because of his own personal assumptions about what his readers should already know, and there is a lack of some of the conventions we now take for granted in travelogues. For instance while Nessmuk (Sear's pen name) visited numerous lodges, hotels, and rustic guide camps, he refers to almost all of them simple as `camps', giving only scant descriptions and no details about their operations. We don't hear, for instance, a word about the beds, bathrooms, manner of lighting, or significant architectural details. We don't hear about the customs, atmosphere, or clothing styles of the time, and we certainly don't find out anything at all about the quality of construction in the buildings, the plumbing, or if the structures had stone foundations, or outbuildings. There are not even any indications of whether the camps are cleared, have grounds, or are still rustically situated in raw forest. The included pictures fill in some of these details, but Sears himself gives nary a jot to the subject. We do hear as much as anyone could care to hear about all the trout and venison that were consumed, and we do get a good glimpse of the make up of the meals (Nessmuk confesses his culinary prowess and a well laid table is obviously of some interest to him), and we do get colourful portraits of particular guides and camp operators. On the other hand we get almost nothing about the shadowy tourists who are reported to be so numerous at the camps as to make Mary and Joseph sleep out under their canoe.

It is fun to join Nessmuk in secret forays to lakes and ponds, "not on any map" and I reflected about my own 100 lakes project and how detailed and numerous are the options for locating water of interest. The freely accessible online Atlas of Canada, for example, gives me so much information on my chosen landscape that there literally are no ponds and lakes off the map. I imagine Nessmuk's eyes would bug out at the detail available from this and similar resources.

I'm glad I read Nessmuk, his values of environmental preservation, his matter of fact statements on the absolute necessity of idleness to good health, and his folksy evaluation of guides and their customers felt comfortably candid. He distains dullards, braggarts, and pothunters but sings the praise's of trustworthy guides who practice courtesy and truthfulness. In so doing I felt reassured about the kind of folks who populate the wilds, felt there was hope yet if such good eggs could hold sway still.

Nessmuk's pride in `going light' and in the merits of his diminutive canoes is endearing. His fondness for his Spartan camp list and fragile craft is balanced nicely with his recommendations; well really his insistence, on comfort. Comfort and an uncomplicated schedule are to be sought only in as far as they do not violate enjoyment of remote locations to idle and fish. This balance strikes me as being rather noteworthy and hints at why the man is held up as an example to follow. His illness, and his resoluteness to soldier on in spite of his illness, makes him roundly human. I like this frankness and find it believable, partly because he is also willing to quit when his illness is too severe. This is a frail, courageous, passionate man engaged in a pursuit he loves. The qualities that I like most in him are his honesty, determination, and preference for and acceptance of people of good character. He likes the good guys, tells us why they are good, and in so doing encourages us to live in a similar manner. His enthusiasm for nature in infectious, and I could not get out of my head the idea that some day I would meet him or go on a trip with him. Of course he is long gone and only his written words carry on. Still, I know that as I paddle past a spot I think he would have liked I will smile and imagine he is with me to enjoy it, this small man in one of his tiny canoes, a true companion in the ways that matter.

Here are a few choice quotes from the book:

"just under my eyes as I write, there is an island in the river some twelve rods long by six wide. It is well timbered with spruce, balsam, hemlock, cedar, pine, birch and maple. It is on of the pleasant spots that nature makes and man neglects." - Pg. 36, 37

"Now, I like to cook, can do it well, and I wanted a quiet place to lay off, paddle, fish, float and possess my soul in peace." - Pg. 56

"Yes. Let us leave the hot pavements, the baking, blistering walls and sweltering sleep, or sleepless, rooms. Let us, i' God's name, take to the cool waters and calm shades of the forest." - Pg. 69

"if you have an eye for nature, the time will not be lost." - Pg. 116

"I dressed and walked down to the landing, where I made a fire against the rock used as a washing station by the House of Sbattis, lighted a pipe and resumed my favourite exercise of sitting on a log." - Pg. 122

"We, the "outers," who go to the blessed woods for rest and recreation, are prone to handicap our pleasures in the matter of overweight; guns, rods, duffle, boats, etc. We take a deal of stuff to the woods, only to wish we had left it at home, and end our trips by leaving dead loads of impedimenta in deserted camps. I should be glad to see this amended. I hope at no distant day to meet independent canoeists, with canoes weighing twenty pounds or less, at every turn in the wilderness, and with no more duffle than is absolutely necessary." - Pg. 138

Conflict and Cooperation: Christian-Muslim Relations in Contemporary Egypt (Syracuse Studies on Peace and Conflict Resolution), by Peter M

Egypt is considered the intellectual birthplace of the modern Islamic movements, and is a center of Islamic thought and culture. It is also home to one of the oldest Christian populations in the world. While conflict between these two communities is often the focus of media attention in the region, important efforts to advocate for and support positive inter-communal relations are finding a degree of success.
In this book, Peter Makari considers the role of governmental and non-governmental actors in conflict resolution and the promotion of positive Christian-Muslim relations in Egypt. He maintains that, prevailing opinions notwithstanding, the last quarter-century has witnessed a high level of inter-religious cooperation and tolerance. Relying heavily on Arabic sources, Makari examines the rhetoric and actions of official governmental and religious institutions. Combining empirical research with an informed theoretical perspective, this work offers a perspective seldom available to the English reader on questions of tolerance, citizenship, and civil society in this part of the Arab world.

A Useful but marred text
By Dexter Van Zile
This book provides a lot of important background material for people interested in Coptic-Muslim relations.

A close reading of Makari's text however, reveals a serious problem. In his book author Peter Makari describes Sayyd Tantawi, the Grand Mufti of Al Ahzar Univeristy in Cairo, who died of a heart attack on March 10, 2010, as one of several "Egyptian Muslim religious officials who have, since the 1990s, expressed fraternal feelings with Egypt's non-Muslims."

Makari reports that Tantawi wrote "books on various topics, including Israel in the Holy Qur'an and Sunna" and describes Tantawi as a "moderate Islamic voice" who has spoken of "equality in rights and responsibilities" for Muslims and non-Muslims in Egypt, despite the fact that he supported "the imperative that Copts pay the jizya, a kind of tax paid by non-Muslims in the Muslim community to retain their protect status as ahl adh-dhimma." (Makari, 2007, pages 98-99). (Remember the name of the book Makari mentions. It's important.)

On page 100 of his text, Makari writes, Tantawi "has remained steadfast in his call for good relations between Egypt's Muslims and Christians, and among all people generally."

The sheikh sounds like a good guy, doesn't he? There's just one problem. The late sheikh, simply put, was a notorious and inveterate anti-Semite who mined the Koran and the life of Muhammad for passages and teachings that justified Islamic Jew-hatred.

He did this in a 700-page text The Children of Israel in the Qur'an and the Sunna, originally published in Cairo in the 1960s and republished in 1986. (It's the same book Makari mentioned in his text on Christian-Muslim relations.)

In this text, which has been excerpted in The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: from Sacred Texts to Solemn History edited by Andrew G. Bostom (Prometheus Press, 2008), Tantawi uses passages from the Koran to depict Jews as enemies of God, his prophets and of Islam itself. In one particularly troubling passage Tantawi writes:

"Qur'an describes people of the Book in general terms, with negative attributes like their fanaticism in religion, following a false path. It describes the Jews with their own particular degenerate characteristics, i.e., killing the prophets of God, corrupting his words by putting them in the wrong places, consuming the people's wealth frivolously, refusal to distance themselves from the evil they do, and other ugly characteristics caused by their [...] deep rooted lasciviousness."

Later, after quoting some passages from the Koran, Tantawi writes "This means that not all Jews are not the same. The good ones become Muslims; the bad ones do not." (Legacy, page 394). Elsewhere, Tantawi writes that the Jews "initiated hostilities against the Islamic call in Medina." He continues: "They took every measure they could to extinguish its fire and vitiate its power." Later he writes, "we are not exaggerating when we say that the Jews left no stone unturned in the attempt to snuff out the Islamic call, nor was any means considered out of bounds in order to denigrate Islam and its Prophet--they tried everything they could." (Legacy, 399)

It doesn't stop there. Matthias Küntzel, author of Jihad and Jew Hatred: Islamism and the Roots of 9/11, writes that "Tantawi, the highest Sunni Muslim theologian, quotes Hitlers remark in Mein Kampf that "in resisting the Jew, I am doing the work of the Lord." Küntzel continues: "He praises The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, noting without the slightest trace of sympathy that "after the publication of the Protocols in Russia, some 10,000 Jews were killed."

Tantawi made a number of other troubling statements. For example, in 2002, Tantawi declared that Jews are "the enemies of Allah, descendents of apes and pigs." The following year, Tantawi issued an edict declaring that Jews should no longer be described in such a manner, apparently under pressure from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

While Tantawi did condemn the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 he later affirmed terrorism against Israelis. In 2002, the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), reported that Tantawi "declared that martyrdom (suicide) operations and the killing of civilians are permitted acts and that more such attacks should be carried out. Tantawi's positions were posted on [....], a website associated with AlAzhar." This is MEMRI's translation of website:

"The great Imam of AlAzhar Sheikh Muhammad Sayyed Tantawi, demanded that the Palestinian people, of all factions, intensify the martyrdom operations [i.e. suicide attacks] against the Zionist enemy, and described the martyrdom operations as the highest form of Jihad operations. He says that the young people executing them have sold Allah the most precious thing of all."

"[Sheikh Tantawi] emphasized that every martyrdom operation against any Israeli, including children, women, and teenagers, is a legitimate act according to [Islamic] religious law, and an Islamic commandment, until the people of Palestine regain their land and cause the cruel Israeli aggression to retreat..."

This same MEMRI report adds that "It should be noted that a March 18, 2002 demonstration at Al Azhar University featured eight students who had been trained to carry out suicide attacks against Israelis." In other words, terrorist recruiting took place at the university where Tantawi served as Grand Mufti.

How could Makari miss these obvious problems with Tantawi's career and the book he wrote? Did Makari even read Tantawi's book about the Jews or did he cite it without having read it just to make it look like he had done his research? If Makari did read Tantawi's book, but missed its obvious anti-Semitism, just how good is his command of Arabic?

Whatever its cause, Makari's failure to acknowledge Tantawi's notorious Jew-hatred seems like a pretty substantial error.

Review

"Why did a region so clearly identified with Barry Goldwater, Paul Laxalt, and Orrin Hatch start tilting Democratic in the last decade? Public opinion analyst Ruy Teixeira and a talented group of demographers, geographers, and political scientists explain why this has happened, and why the trend may continue. If you want to look more deeply into party divisions and population trends affecting the upcoming election, this is the book for you."―John B. Judis, Senior Editor, The New Republic

"Ruy Teixeira is one of our premier students of the interaction of demographic trends and electoral politics. America's New Swing Region is required reading for political junkies on all points of the political spectrum."―Michael Barone, principal author, The Almanac of American Politics

"Ruy Teixeira once again demonstrates his prowess for analyzing demographic changes and the political shifts that occur alongside them. For anyone, especially any political professional, who is thinking seriously about the national electoral landscape, this book is essential for understanding the dynamic shifts that have transformed the Mountain West into a critically important swing region."―Joel Benenson, lead pollster for President Barack Obama

"All of the elements of America's decades-long demographic transformation―the Latino population boom, the rise of the college-educated upper middle class, the increasing diversity of the inner suburbs―come into particularly sharp relief in the mushrooming states of the Mountain West. What had been a Republican stronghold is now contested ground, where both major parties will invest enormous sums in 2012 and in many elections to come. America's New Swing Region is an indispensable guide to the states that now hold the key to the White House."―Reihan Salam, editor of The Agenda blog, National Review Online
