Review
Segall's book draws our attention to the use of media, art and popular culture by ordinary people living through extraordinary times. She highlights the role of affect and emotion in resisting, negotiating, understanding and coping with dramatic and sometimes violent political change. --Nicola Pratt, coauthor of What Kind of Liberation? Women and the Occupation of Iraq
A keen listener and observer, Kimberly Wedeven Segall brings together two decades of engagement with Middle Eastern and African communities that have sought to forge new political imaginaries. Drawing our attention to many forgotten springs beyond the newly named Arab Spring, Segall shows how popular and artistic expressions in these communities have resulted in hybrid blooms of democratic voices. --Gaurav Desai, coeditor of Postcolonialisms: An Anthology of Cultural Theory and Criticism
Segall engages some of the most innovative artists of contemporary South African theatre, including Brett Bailey, Ya l Farber, and Nadia Davids. Performing artists' meditations on the complexities of post-apartheid democracy illuminate the gulf between South Africa's constitution, with its progressive aspirations for human rights, and the legacies of an apartheid past evident in persistent violence and socio-economic inequality today. --Catherine M. Cole, author of Performing South Africa's Truth Commission: Stages of Transition

Insightful analysis of transformations in Iraq and South Africa
By LBs4Justice
Dr. Segall's book is an immensely valuable contribution to the field-- and a delight to read. Segall's book takes its place within a small but rich literature about gender, memory, and politics in Iraq (joining the likes of Najde al-Ali, Nicola Pratt, and Noga Efrati). Segall's introduction is particularly insightful in offering new ways to think about the diverse ways in which ordinary people express their political opinions, whether through songs, poetry, blogs, or plays. Her attention to the "ordinary people" is part of what makes this book so unique, in addition to the number of years Segall has spent living, working, researching, and volunteering in the communities she writes about. She is able to give the reader an excellent "feel" for how these communities have responded to the political changes around them and expressed their own viewpoints. Her work with the Iraqi diaspora in the United States helps to show how these forms of political expression maintain their salience even outside of the original settings in which they were first created. Although I am less familiar with the South African context, the comparative component of her work helps the reader to understand what aspects of "performing democracy" are unique to particular countries and communities, and which aspects might be more universal. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to better understand the recent transformations in Iraq and South Africa.
