Excellent translation

David Marcus' excellent translation of ''Cúirt An Mhéan Oíche" is again in print and that's good news. This edition features the original Irish on one page and the English translation opposite. The work has been controversial over the years but the original Irish version was never banned in Ireland as is sometimes mistakenly said. It had many fans - De Valera learned it off by heart when he was imprisoned by the English authorities in 1916. He wrote to his wife at the time:
"I'm getting the Cúirt an Mheán Oíche all off by heart. ... If you read it I know you would like it. It is the nicest poem I have met in Irish. One of the principal pleasures I have in doing Irish poetry is to be able to read it with you when we are together."

Leabhar sult agus inspéise

Is lebhar maith é seo le Gaeilge ar déis agus Bearla ar chlé. Tá na fócail beagán deacair do núíosach ach tá an scéal go h-iontach.
This is a good book with Gaelic on the right and English on the left. The words are a little difficult for a beginner but the story is great.
