scholarly but very readable

Yiddish poet,Morris Rosenfeld,is the best known of the "Sweatshop Poets" of the Lower East side of New York. He lived and worked in the wretched conditions of the "Sweatshops" at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Rosenfeld wrote numerous poems promoting a socialist revolution that would free the oppressed workers from their drugery. Later, in what would become his most successful poetry, Rosenfeld abandons the hopeful message of the revolutionary and concentrates on the sad life of the immigrant worker himself. These melancholy poems of the day to day struggle in the world of the sweatshop,have a universal appeal and made him an international star.
Professor Miller deftly weaves the life of Morris Rosenfeld into the social and literary world in which he lived. Then he skillfully analyzes excerpts from the actual poems to demonstrate the skill and humanity of the poet. The book has an extensive bibliograhpy for further study. I just wish that he included full versions of Rosenfeld's poem.

The authors focus their attention on three key areas: the electoral process, including elections and the way people get involved; the impact of location, including demographic shifts and changing development patterns; and the critical role of nonprofit organizations and voluntary associations, including the philanthropy that help keep them going.

Basic Overview of SxE Leaves Much Unexplored Turf

After wondering for ten years when academia was going to get around to examining straight edge, I was pleasantly surprised to see not one, but two books on the subculture published last year (the other is Ross Haenfler's "Straight Edge"). Wood's study is based on interviews, content analysis of lyrics, and semiotic analysis of symbols, and reads like a good dissertation. It's deeply rooted in subcultural theory, and the central thesis is that straight edge is a such a dynamic subculture that no one flavor of subcultural theory (such as interactionist, Birmingham, etc.) can explain it on its own, but rather that a whole array of tools and theories need to be applied to it.

This is all relatively clearly explained -- for an academic work -- but the examination of identity formation is unlikely to be that fascinating to a general reader who knows little or nothing about straight edge. Personally, I got into straight edge around 1987 and remain so, and the study told me little I wasn't already explicitly or implicitly aware of. The focus of the work is straight edge's constant revisioning, from its birth as an offshoot of punk, to the addition of vegetarian and animal rights, the emergence of "hardline", and even Satanic elements (This satanic linkage was one area that was totally new to me. The other part that gave me something new to think about was Woods' assertion that the Reagan-era "War on Drugs" provided latent cultural support for straight edge. He's very careful to distance himself from any cause and effect pronouncements, but it's a linkage that nonetheless strikes me as more coincidental than anything.)Along the way, the reader gets a concise history of the subculture, along with a selection of quotes from key figures. These are especially useful in the section describing the transition of many straight edge kids into Krishna Consciousness.

On the whole, this is nice volume in subcultural studies using straight edge as a case study, but unlikely to that useful to those seeking a detailed sense of the history or demographics of straight edge. There are lots of questions that aren't addressed: for example, why is straight edge primarily a white middle class male subculture. Why (and how) has it gained a strong presence is some countries (Germany, Japan, and Norway for example), but not others? What are the factors that lead to people "claiming" or "unclaiming" the subculture? How do extreme applications of the subculture, such as the Salt Lake City crew, come about? How do some bands become associated with straight edge even if they aren't? Hopefully Wood will go on to address these more complex aspects of straight edge as he continues his academic career.

An academic engagement with Straight Edge clearly intended for sociology scholars

This text isn't a readable straight edge primer for those who are unaware of the hardcore punk community or straight edge, nor is this a book intended for consumption by current residents of the hardcore community. This is a sociology text focusing on the study of straight edge and additionally including some commentary about subculture study and the study of youth subcultures in general, making the intended reader for this text narrow, and its readability compromised for anyone without prior interest in sociology.

The text is dry, but still very informative, and it does give a brief (though generally insufficient) rundown of each of the sociological ideas it utilizes to evaluate straight edge. The book confines itself to exploring straight edge as a subculture and how that subculture's ideas shifted throughout history. It pays lip service to some more off-the-beaten path ideas about straight edge, such as feminist straight edge (by way of articulating the female perspective of straight edge) but it does so briefly and insufficiently. Primarily what is discussed are conventional straight edge, hardline, and Hare Krishna, well worn topics for anyone familiar with straight edge, however examining each of these things from a sociological perspective is certainly interesting.

The biggest benefit to the text for those familiar with hardcore and straight edge is the reexamining of straight edge through a sociological lens (although almost all the time the insights aren't groundbreaking) and more significantly insight into the relationship between straight edge and The Process Church of Final Judgment. For many, myself included, The Process Church and its function within hardcore can be somewhat confusing, and this book expounds on it quite nicely.

This text is not perfect, and it omits huge portions of the straight edge experience, but not for lack of trying. The text doesn't present itself as a monolithic or complete text on straight edge, and it in facts cautions researchers about those types of ideas in the research of any subculture, making these omissions far more forgivable. The text won't redefine anyone's view of straight edge (unless its woefully misinformed), but the text is balanced and informative on the issues it does explore, and is a worthy read for any interested party, although maybe a slightly boring one for those not interested in the sociological concepts which serve as the book's foundation

Pretty Good.

This is a great and quick read if you want a pretty good overview of the straightedge subculture. It does not focus on the negative/militant stereotypes (even though they are mentioned, which is not a bad thing. it is what it is.) This book talks a lot about the old school hardcore which is good because a lot of kids in the scene today have lost touch with their roots. It also talks about a lot of different beliefs that straightedge people may or may not follow, such as but no limited to veganism, satanism, and Krishna.

Good book. Pick it up if your into or want to learn about this awesome subculture.

only reason i didnt give it a five is because the guy who wrote it sounded kinda repetitive sometimes, but it was necessary at times, but other times he could have left things out.

About the Author
Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. While still a young man he demonstrated extraordinary abilities in a wide range of pursuits, including science, theology, and music. In 1908 he published his magisterial study of the life and works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He studied medicine from 1905 to 1913 at the University of Strasbourg, then founded a hospital in French Equatorial Africa, where he spent most of the remainder of his life. Schweitzer used his Nobel Prize stipend to expand the hospital and to build a leper colony. His bookThe Quest of the Historical Jesus is also available from Johns Hopkins.

A Missing Voice

These letters were compiled by their daughter, Rhena, who believed they'd all been destroyed. Sadly, it was about 146 letters of her mother's which had been and, am assuming, by Helene. It leaves quite a void, not only in months between the letters of Albert and Helene, but also an emotional one which encompassed 12 yrs of correspondence. It is wonderful that there are any of these letters, but one cannot help but wonder what her mother thought. They were certainly two remarkable people who were not only on the same page, but also both very sacrificing. I've read Dag Hammarskjold's biography and was struck by the similarity of these two men and their common beliefs that "suffering and deprivation" went hand-in-hand with being a "good Christian." Neither men struck me as "allowing" themselves to be free from either. Albert and Helene's life together seemed to fall into that category & think the exchange of letters was less interrupted than their actual time together. Missing, is how Helene really felt; mostly the letters are his and all the different things in which he was involved. I do not doubt their love and devotion to each other, and their common cause in serving God, still, her voice is sorely missed and makes this incomplete for me, but glad to have read it as it gives more insight into this man, his life, and his work.

A Gift to the Field of Conflict Resolution

I love the kind of comedic scenes in movies that parody self-absorption, the running into walls because of staring at one's own image, for example. If the field of conflict resolution were represented by the walker in such a comedic instance, Re-Centering is the wise, necessary tap on the shoulder that brings the walker's attention back to the world around, back to a broader, healthier view.

I've been looking forward to the publication of this book since I first heard about the work of PRASI. Editors Trujillo, Bowland, Myers, Richards, and Roy have given all of us a great gift; I hope we as students read and re-read. Readers will see what I did, that the discussions of power, myth, cultural realities, organizational development, justice, the interrelation of practice and theory, and improving our practice have always been present in the field but have been at times hard to find or hard to hear in larger dialogues. It is good to have at least this many contributors in one volume. These strong and great voices have been with us for decades, contributing to the field in many ways, contributing to the world their knowledge, perspective, scholarship, and practice. They call us to greater involvement in the future of conflict resolution, learning more, seeing and understanding more. Conflict resolution of all kinds is gaining greater prominence in all arenas as the alternative to violence and isolation. Re-Centering will help prepare the field for that future.

And while the book can't of its own power melt walls, it does offer its readers' the education, knowledge, and tools that may keep us walking through this field with more wholeness, breadth and balance.

No easy answers

This book, Re-Centering Culture and Knowledge in Conflict Resolution Practice, arrived in the mail today, a gift from an anonymous donor. I am tempted to push away all the day's tasks and sink into the wonders I see peeking out from the covers. With contributors from a delightful variety of backgrounds and chapter titles such as "Wilderness: Scared of the Sacred"; "Is Reconciliation Possible? Lessons from Combating 'Modern Racism'"; to "What is Justice in Conflict Resolution Practice?" this book will set me on the path to answer questions I've long pondered about the cultural context for conflict resolution.

Second, housing has all but disappeared as a major social policy issue over the past two decades. This timely book shows how unequal housing choices and sprawling development create an unequal geography of opportunity. It emerges from a project sponsored by the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University in collaboration with the Joint Center for Housing Studies and the Brookings Institution. The contributors—policy analysts, political observers, social scientists, and urban planners—document key patterns, their consequences, and how we can respond, taking a hard look at both successes and failures of the past. Xavier de Souza Briggs is associate professor of sociology and urban planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a former faculty member at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a former senior policy official at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
