This booklet includes a lecture called Second Generation and four remarkable short stories by Etgar Keret: Asthma Attack, Shoes, Siren, and Foreign Language, the last of which has never before appeared in the United States. Openly discussing his family background for the first time, Keret brings to life the confused experience of growing up as an Israeli child of Holocaust survivors. One of Israel s leading voices in literature and cinema, Keret mixes wry humor, keen intelligence, and subtle tenderness to create some of the most provocative and entertaining stories of his generation.

"Every person is a world champion in something..."
By Friederike Knabe
...the father told his young son,"but [...] most of us will never discover what we are really good at." Etgar Keret has taken his father's words very much to heart: he has become an award winning story teller, a film producer and, first of all, an astute and candid observer of life in his country, Israel.

FOUR STORIES is much more than the title suggests. Two introductions to his person (by Ken Frieden and George Saunders) are helpful and add to our understanding of Keret, the author and his work and thinking. The four stories selected for this slim volume, expand on the topic of his lecture, especially how exposure to the experiences of the generation of Holocaust survivors can impact the life of the young, the second generation, in different ways. Two of them stand out for me in particular. In the first, Keret describes a visit to a Holocaust Memorial by a boys' class, in the second he illustrates schoolboys' behaviour in competition. In both, the relationship to an older person, a survivor, is the moral focus of the story.

The centre piece of this booklet is Keret's B.G. Rudolph Lecture in Judaic Studies, presented in 2009 and edited for this compilation. It is more an informal talk than a lecture in the academic sense and its title is deceptively simple: Second Generation. In it, Keret reflects on his personal perspective on being a second generation Holocaust survivor. He summarizes his parents' ordeal and their way of coping with it. Like in his short story writings, he is open, direct, informal and candid here. He raises his concerns about the trends in the nineteen-nineties of publishers and film makers to search out any kind of second generation survivor story. His personal experiences, he explains, have, in some ways, set him apart from others of his generation. "When they wanted to "classify me under this second-generation token", he felt," that it was some sort of reduction of my family and of my relationship with my parents..." In contrast to many survivor families where the past is solidly covered with silence, his parents and "never denied the horrifying experience they had gone through, but there was something in the way they told it." It was in this context that his father spoke about every person being a world champion: he told his son what made him one and how it helped him survive...

Reading this booklet will encourage any reader to pick up one or the other collection of Etgar Keret's short stories. I had the privilege to hear him speak recently, capturing the audience with stories and candid answers to the interviewer's questions. His reading of the title story from his upcoming collection in English, with the current draft title "Then there was a knock at the door", makes me impatient to read more. [Friederike Knabe]

Another great work by Keret.
By Levi H. Noir
The lecture is an important contribution to dealing with historical trauma. Keret's personal perspective gives a unique insight into it-- both as a writer and as a son of Holocaust survivors. The short stories are simply Keret and gain additional depth in the context of the lecture.

Not all new material
By tigermama
I love Etgar Keret, and the introduction/presentation included at the beginning of the book was great. However, I had read 3 of the 4 stories in his other collections, which was disappointing. I guess I should have checked exactly what was included.

Nitzotz: The Spark of Resistance in Kovno Ghetto and Dachau-Kaufering Concentration Camp (Religion, Theology and the Holocaust), by Laura

Under the brutal conditions of the Dachau-Kaufering concentration camp, a handful of young Jews resolved to resist their Nazi oppressors. Their weapons were their words. After the Soviet occupation of Kovno, the members of Irgun Brith Zion circulated an underground journal, Nitzotz (Spark), in which they debated Zionist politics and laid plans for postwar settlement in Palestine. When the Kovno Ghetto was destroyed, several contributors to Nitzotz were deported to the German interior, where they were constcripted to slave labor in the satellite camps of Dachau. Against all odds, they did not lay down their pens.
Nitzotz is the only known Hebrew-language publication to have appeared consistently throughout the Nazi occupation anywhere in Europe. Its authors believed that their intellectual defiance would insulate them against the dehumanizing cruelty of the concentration camp and equip them to lead the postwar effort for the physical and spiritual regeneration of European Jewry. In Nitzotz: The Spark of Resistance in Kovno Ghetto and Dachau-Kaufering Concentration Camp, Laura M. Weinrib presents this remarkable document to English readers for the first time. Along with a translation of the five remaining Dachau-Kaufering issues, the book includes an extensive critical introduction. Nitotz is a tribute to the inspiring faith of those struggling for survival.

"Under the brutal conditions of the Dachau-Kaufering concentration camp, a handful of young Jews resolved to resist their Nazi oppressors. Their weapons were their words.... Nitzotz is a testament to the resilience of those struggling for survival."- Mann About Town --Mann About Town

"Just two months after the liquidation of the Kovno ghetto, a Dachau- Kaufering issue of Nitzotz appeared. Its editors were Abraham Melamed and Shlomo Frenkel Shafir. The first two issues were written by Frenkel from the BBC nightly, German broadcasts while he was in Kaufering 1 and II. These secret publications were a result of the underground meetings of the IBZ (Irgun Brith Zion) begun secretly in the Kovno Ghetto and continued in the Kaufering camps, where they were an inspiration to other Zionists in the camps. They are Hebrew language publications, a language forbidden by their occupiers, but continued in secret."- Jewish Book World --Jewish Book World

About the Author
Laura Weinrib is a Samuel I. Golieb Fellow in legal history at New York University School of Law. Her grandfather Shlomo Frenkel Shafir was the editor of Nitzotz during the Dachau-Kaufering years and after liberation.

Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin, by Fiona Hill, Clifford G. Gaddy

Vladimir Putin has been Russia's dominant political figure for more than a decade, but he is a man of many identities. He likes to play roles. The images that his public relations team has orchestrated range from big game hunter to scuba diver to biker, even night club crooner. It is reminiscent of the British cartoon character Mr. Benn. Observers have variously said, he has no face, no substance, no soul; he is "the man from nowhere" —a nobody, yet a man who can appear to be anybody. Of course, Putin is not a "nobody"; he only wants the world to see him that way, and he has gone to extraordinary lengths throughout his life to conceal who he really is.

In this book, Russian experts Fiona Hill and Clifford Gaddy answer the question, "Who is Mr. Putin?" Drawing on many sources, including their own personal encounters with him, they argue that there are, in fact, several "real Putins." His outlook has been shaped by many influences —a combination of archetypical Russian mentality, a very close reading of Russian history and literature, his own early life, his KGB training, his time in East Germany, his experiences in St. Petersburg in the 1990s, his early days behind the scenes in Moscow, and his time at the helm of the Russian state. Understanding his multidimensional nature is and should be important for U.S. and other policymakers trying to decide how to approach and interact with him.

While uncovering the many real identities of Mr. Putin, the authors concentrate on five essential ones: Putin the Statist, Putin the Survivalist, Putin the Outsider, Putin the Free Marketeer, and Putin the Case Officer. For each of these identities, they explain what it is, why it is important for understanding Putin, and trace its roots and evolution.

Finally, they examine the nature of the personalized system that Putin has built up and why it can be understood as a logical result of his personality. He has an idealized view of himself as CEO of "Russia, Inc." In reality, his leadership style is more like that of the don of a mafia family. The system is personalized, private, informal; enforcement is not by positive incentives but by threats. Putin the CEO has not been the executive of a transparent public corporation; he's been one who operated in the closed board room of a privately held corporation, feeling no need to disclose the shareholders or motivate any decisions. And now his corporation is in crisis. The public is demanding that Putin the CEO be held accountable for its failings.

From Publishers Weekly
"Brookings Institution senior fellows and veteran Russia watchers Hill and Gaddy (The Siberian Curse) bring high-level expertise to bear on the enigma of Vladimir Putin in this illuminating study." -- Publishers Weekly

Review
“Of the many biographies of Vladimir Putin that have appeared in recent years, this one is the most useful, particularly to foreign-policy makers, many of whom must work with a crude or muddled understanding of what makes the Russian leader tick.” -- Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs

“There's Mr. Putin, by Fiona Hill and Clifford Gaddy. Insightful.”–- Vice President Joseph Biden in Rolling Stone

"[T]his is not just another Putin biography. It is a psychological portrait, a handbook providing sometimes speculative but well-informed answers to the question that has trailed the ex-KGB colonel from St Petersburg ever since he stepped out of the shadows and on to the international stage when he became Russia’s prime minister in 1999: “Who is Mr Putin?” -- Neil Buckley, Financial Times

"Since Vladimir Putin's return to the Kremlin, Russia-watchers have revisited the perennial puzzle of 'Who is Mr. Putin?'. Fiona Hill and Clifford Gaddy, scholars at the Brookings Institution, have produced the most illuminating study so far…" -- Angela Stent, Georgetown University, in Survival

"With so many one-dimensional portraits of the Russian leader, the new offering by Fiona Hill and Clifford Gaddy is a refreshing change of pace.” -- Nikolas Gvosdev, Naval War College, in The National Interest.

“Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin is a readable and informed portrait, painted by two students of Russian history who had, at various times in their careers, a front-row view.” -- David Hearst, The Guardian

“Fiona Hill and Clifford Gaddy’s new book Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin… is a smart and thoughtful piece of work.” -- Ivan Krastev, Chairman, Centre for Liberal Studies

“According to this intriguing book, Mr Putin’s success can be ascribed to a series of transformations in which he has posed, first as a he-man, then as a sportsman or military man, with appropriate costumes for each.” -- The Economist

Advance Praise

"In this well-written and genuinely entertaining volume, Hill and Gaddy take us behind the theatrics and the rumors to give us a clear and intriguing view of the man himself. This book is mandatory reading for the president and his advisers." -- Robert Kagan, author of The World America Made

"Hill and Gaddy illuminate not only the recent past but offer a tantalizing glimpse of what the future may hold." -- John McLaughlin, former Deputy Director of U.S. Central Intelligence.

"Theirs is a tough analysis. Not everyone will agree with every aspect. But, if you want to begin to understand Russia today, read this book." -- Sir John Scarlett, former Chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6)

"A meticulous psychological portrait of Vladimir Putin and of the highly personalized state he has molded. How Vladimir Putin sees himself is key to how his system works, but, after twelve years of Putin Power, the nation and the people he leads have changed while Putin himself has not. Can Putin reinvent himself? Hill and Gaddy say Russia's new urban middle class wants more than a 'political performance artist."-- Jill Dougherty, former Moscow Bureau Chief, CNN

Great for people interested in modern Russia
By LEO
As someone who has spent a lot of time thinking about Russia, I thought this book was an excellent guide to understanding Putin's style of government. He came out of nowhere to become the president of a country on the verge of collapse and is now extremely well-known throughout the world, but no one has any idea where he came from. This book clearly explained the logic behind his policies, and even made him sympathetic, in spite of the familiar gangster image that Americans are most familiar with. This was well-written and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

An innovative approach to understanding how Russia is ruled
By Daniel Goldberg
A highly readable work and a very useful addition to the literature on Putin and Putinism. The multiple identities approach was a brilliant innovation, for Putin is a complex character who cannot be examined using a single lens. That said, one could no doubt comb even what little we have in the way of facts about earlier periods of his life to find additional identities - The Loyalist, for example. Of special note is the discussion of Putin having been Absent at the Revolution - having missed out on the events and atmospherics of Perestroyka, and how that made him different from other Russian politicians.

"Time Machine" Book: To Regress or Progress?
By Dmitry Ivanov
This is a book one can enjoy reading several times. As a person who eye-witnessed political and economic changes of the 1990s and 2000s, I found the book more about the recent history of the Russian political system than the celebrity president. No doubt, the authors' retrospective analysis helps understand Mr. Putin's views, values, and vision for Russia. And these are not unique to the Russian president alone. Operative in the Kremlin is a "time-machine" book. It is both serious and fun to read. I would recommend the book to Russian students who study history, political science, international affairs, or economics.

Owning Up: Poverty, Assets, and the American Dream, by Michelle Miller-Adams

Despite the recent success of welfare reform in moving people off public assistance and into jobs, most of America's working poor are still unable to accumulate even the most minimal of assets. Even when they are getting by, they lack many of the resources—tangible and intangible—that provide middle-class Americans with a sense of security, stability, and a stake in the future. In Owning Up, Michelle Miller-Adams demonstrates how asset-building programs, used in combination with traditional income-based support, can be an effective means for helping millions of American out of poverty. Miller-Adams expands the traditional concept of assets to encompass a range of tools, experiences, resources, and support systems that are necessary if asset building is to serve as an effective anti-poverty strategy. She identifies four types of assets that can represent sources of wealth for low-income individuals and communities: economic human social, and natural assets. Economic assets include equity, retirement savings, and other financial holdings. Human assets include education, knowledge, skills, and talents. Included among social assets are the networks of trust and reciprocity that bind communities together. Natural assets include the land, water, air and other natural resources we depend on for survival. Owning Up also examines five organizations at the forefront of building assets for the poor. Their stories are told through the eyes of individuals whose lives they have helped transform. These organizations have all developed effective strategies for building assets, and Miller-Adams identifies them as models to be emulated elsewhere. The profiled organizations include: Neighborhoods Incorporated of Battle Creek, Michigan. Its innovative strategies seek to increase home ownership and promote neighborhood revitalization in poor communities. The Watershed Research and Training Center. This local organization strengthens the natural resource-based economy by retraining workers and strengthening social ties. The Private Industry Partnership of Wildcat Service Corporation. Based in New York City, PIP trains former welfare recipients in New York City for entry-level white collar jobs. Iowa's Institute for Social and Economic Development. This microenterprise development organization is one of the largest U.S. based organizations training low-income entrepreneurs. The Corporation for Enterprise Development. CFED, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that has been instrumental in showing that poor people can and will save if given the opportunities and incentives for doing so. They have helped put Individual Development Accounts on the national agenda.

"Miller-Adams has done excellent research and written a book that succeeds in its mission.... Owning Up should be a valuable addition to reading selections in the community development area, and I recommend it to those planning academicians and practitioners who want an overview of this new approach to empowerment." —Jan S. Wells, Rutgers University, Journal of the American Planning Association, 9/1/2003

Great Book Study Book
By J. Taylor
As a non-profit executive director, I have found the book study format to be a great way to engage my Board of Directors in issues that we work on. Dr. Miller-Adams' book is set up very well for this activity, is well written for understanding issues, and provides positive, replicable examples of organizations helping low income Americans build their assets. Written in a readable style, it is not intimidating for the non social worker. The book is politically neutral and can easily be used by many mainstream organizations to move forward on an issue that is truly important for America.

The Education Gap: Vouchers and Urban Schools, by William G. Howell, Paul E. Peterson

While the merits of vouchers have been the subject of intense public debate in recent years, there has been very little available evidence upon which to gauge their efficacy. The first publicly funded voucher plan involving private schools wasn't established until 1990 in Milwaukee; before then, the only data on school choice came from a small, poorly designed program in California. Voucher programs grew dramatically in the latter half of the 1990s. In 2000, about 60,000 students participated in seventy-one programs, most privately funded. This growth is now providing researchers with the ability to measure the impact of vouchers for the first time in multiple cities. The Education Gap is the first book to gather a significant body of data on vouchers in multiple locations, and it reveals startling new evidence that voucher programs benefit African-American students more than participants from other ethnic groups. To explain this phenomenon, the authors point out that residential selection is the most common form of school choice available in American public education today. Since this process is likely to leave African Americans in the worst public schools, new forms of choice directed toward low-income families are most likely to benefit black students. The authors examine the effects of school vouchers on test scores, parental satisfaction, parent-school communications, and political tolerance among students and parents participating in four pilot programs in New York City; Dayton, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; the Edgewood school district in San Antonio; and a program that offered vouchers to 40,000 low-income families nationwide. Though the programs operated in a wide variety of settings, the findings were surprisingly consistent. After two years, African-American students who used vouchers to switch from public to private schools scored substantially better on math and reading tests. By contrast, no significant positive effects on the test scores of other ethnic groups were detected. While parents in all ethnic groups were generally more supportive of private education, African-American parents expressed particularly high enthusiasm for the private schools their children attended. The authors also report information on the kinds of students and families who take advantage of a voucher opportunity, allowing them to seewhether only the ¡°best and brightest¡± public school students were able to take advantage of school voucher programs. The results documented in The Education Gap shed new light on the effects of school vouchers on students in poor, urban environments. This information will be important to policymakers, scholars, and citizens are they continue to search for ways to improve education in urban areas.

Review

"The authors' RFT design sets this study apart from most of the earlier school choice studies...the authors' sophisticated and skillfully presented research elevates a debate that has been largely limited to the realm of politics and public opinion...This impressive volume should be required reading for anyone nvolved in K-12 research or policymaking." —Michael F. Addonizio, Wayne State University, Book Review

"This is the most important book ever written on the subject of vouchers." —John E. Brandl, University of Minnesota, Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs

"Love them or hate them, vouchers are on the agenda. Because of the strength of its research design and the daunting financial and administrative hurdles facing anyone who tries to launch another randomized evaluation of vouchers, The Education Gap will provide an important intellectual battleground for the debate over vouchers for years to come." —Alan B. Krueger, Princeton University

"provide[s] convincing evidence that someone should fund a large, multi-year program that pays all the tuition for any low-income parent who wants to send a child to a private school." —Martin Morse Wooster, The Washington Times, 9/22/2002

"A well-crafted piece of work." —Frances C. Fowler, Miami of Ohio University, Educational Researcher, 3/1/2003

"Presents the results of what has been called the most comprehensive study on vouchers conducted to date." — Education Week, 8/7/2002

"This study is based on the best experimental arrangements on voucher programs to date. The results are intriguing and will generate very healthy debate. It is must reading for anyone interested in the battle over vouchers in America." —John Witte, University of Wisconsin

Howell and Peterson are tops in their field
By Michael T Hartney Jr
Paul Peterson and William Howell are revolutionaries in their field--Education Public Policy. This book is so great because it lacks the ideological and political biases that permeate nearly 90 percent of the voucher books out there. Despite what the previous reviewer stated I wish to defend Howell and Peterson's book (which needs no defending from me). Their book which is put out by the Brookings Institute (hardly an ideologically driven think-tank Brookings is the model of centrism) Howell and Peterson formulate their empirical data from randomized field trials. RFTs are the gold standard in empirical research studies that seek to compare two groups of individuals while controlling for one factor. In this case Howell and Peterson are able to control for the much noted self-selection bias problematic to many voucher studies and show that African-American students from similar economic and educational backgrounds score significantly (1 standard deviation)higher when they are educated in parochial/private schools than in their neighborhood public schools. A wealth of research from 99.9 percent of all the other scholars studying this topic have in one shape or form supported that finding--that black students do improve upon going to a private school viz. a voucher. Only Alan Krueger and Zho (2004) of Princeton discredit parts of the study, but they refuse to control for baseline data which does not allow them to control the self-selection bias. Furthermore Krueger et al. uses a questionable racial classification scheme where self-identified black/hispanic folks are reclassified as African-American/non-hispanic. In the final analysis its hard to disagree with Peterson and Howell and the above reviewer does so at his own peril. These folks are professionals in the truest sense of the word and they work at the venerable Harvard Program on Education and Governance Policy--please don't try to mislead people into thinking they are overly ideologically motivated.

A Versatile American Institution: The Changing Ideals and Realities of Philanthropic Foundations, by David C. Hammack, Helmut K. Anheier

America's grantmaking foundations have grown rapidly over the course of recent decades, even in the face of financial and economic crises. Foundations have a great deal of freedom, enjoy widespread legitimacy, and wield considerable influence. In this book, David Hammack and Helmut Anheier follow up their edited volume, American Foundations, with a comprehensive historical account of what American foundations have done with that independence and power.

While philanthropic foundations play important roles in other parts of the world, the U.S. sector stands out as exceptional. Nowhere else are they so numerous, prominent, or autonomous. What have been the main contributions of philanthropic foundations to American society? And what might the future hold for them?

A Versatile American Institution considers foundations in a new way. Previous accounts typically focused narrowly on their organization, donors, and leaders, and their intentions—but not on the outcome of philanthropy. Rather than looking at foundations in a vacuum, Hammack and Anheier consider their roles and contributions in the context of their times and their economic and political circumstances.

Review

""... an important text on the role of foundations in the U.S.... The authors replace the 'great man or foundation' theory of history with the more accurate depiction of foundations as creations of their culture. Especially valuable are appendixes on the definitions of foundations and on the perspectives that are shaping expectations of foundations. Summing up: Highly recommended. Anyone involved with the nonprofit sector, all levels.""—CHOICE

From the Author
In this book, David Hammack and Helmut Anheier follow up their edited volume American Foundations with a concise historical account of changes in the nation's foundations over the more than two hundred years of their history.

A Versatile American Institution shows that foundations have operated in dramatically changing contexts. These contexts have varied notably from field to field and from place to place. Foundation contexts have also changed greatly over time as one historical formation gives way to another. Foundations first appeared after the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, in the 1790s.  Support of religious communities was then, and continues now to be one of the chief foundation purposes.  Foundations also advanced many Enlightenment causes during the nineteenth century, as they do today.  Altogether, we discern four distinct periods:

  • the sectarian, particular-purpose era of the nineteenth century;

  • the classic institution-building era of the first half of the twentieth century;

  • a postwar period of struggle for strategy and relevance, lasting into the 1990s; and

  • a new period characterized by acceptance of variety and a tighter focus on results.
To write this history, we have drawn on our own extensive original research as well as on a large number of studies both of foundations and of the fields in which foundations have chosen to work.  One feature of this book is our considered discussion of these scattered, diverse, and often contentious studies.

Today's foundations and their constituents, potential grantees, analysts and observers can all learn a great deal from the past, but they must consider past experience in the context of present realities. This book will inform and facilitate that critically important process.

This is the best one-volume history and analysis of the foundation world in the U.S. I have encountered. It combines both political, economic, sociological, and historical methodology to illuminate what is "unique" and significant in this aspect of American philanthropy. Versatile is the word, indeed.

Postscript to the Middle Ages: Teaching Medieval Studies Through Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, by Alison Ganze

More than a quarter century after its publication in English, Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose remains a popular novel among medievalists and non-medievalists alike. Its riveting account of a series of murders at a wealthy Italian abbey during the papacy of John XXII, amidst the tensions of the Franciscan Spiritualist controversy, provides an excellent point of entry to the cultural, philosophical, and theological milieu of fourteenth-century Europe. This collection of essays approaches the novel as a primary text in medieval studies courses and seeks to provide ways of integrating it into such courses effectively.
Part One of the collection consists of essays addressing the pedagogical advantages and pitfalls of teaching The Name of the Rose in a variety of medieval courses, including literature, cultural studies, history, religious studies, art history, and manuscript studies. Serving as a bridge between the explicitly pedagogical essays that precede it and the critical essays that follow, Part Two explores the relationship between Eco's novel and Jean-Jacques Annaud's 1986 film version. The volume concludes with a selection of scholarly essays addressing major medieval historical figures, movements, and cultural phenomena as they pertain to the novel, including fourteenth-century apocalyptic reflections on medieval language and sign theories, and the search for the lost second book of Aristotle's Poetics.
While each essay in the collection stresses its own disciplinary contexts and concerns, they also enrich each other, providing a valuable addition to the relatively small canon of texts on medieval pedagogy.

Umberto Ecco's wonderful novel cum mystery is also a rich source for educating history students as well as lovers of his novel & of Medieval studies. This series of articles written by educators becomes almost a festschrift, a commemorative volume, in the richness of its examination of the tale. I would also recommend the edition of "The Name of the Rose: including the Author's Postscript" which includes Ecco's comments on the novel. It explains why he chose to write the novel ["I wanted to poison a monk") & why he chose to set it when & where he did. It reveals the mind of a fine & whimsical novelist and a great scholar at work. The Name Of The Rose Translated from the Italian by William Weaver. Including the Author's Postscript
