Blair is a senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution and author of Ownership and Control: Rethinking Corporate Governance for the Twenty-first Century (Brookings, 1995). Steven M. H. Wallman is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He is the founder and CEO of the financial services and brokerage firm FOLIOfn.com.

"Unseen Wealth" Helps Us See The Intangibles

Just goes to show you how good Amazon's recomendation engine is - I wouldn't have gone looking for this title, but I am very glad I have it now. This slim volume (only 120 pages, including the notes) goes a long way towards illuminating the importance of "intangible" items such as intellectual capital, research and development, brand names, etc., are to the economic growth and wealth of our society. As the preface to chapter one, Blair and Wallman quote Attorney Lloyd Cutler (commenting on the proposed breakup of Microsoft), "Given that no company can establish a monopoly on brains, how do you keep the people that make it work? There are no tangible assets to divest. There is intellectual property and that's about it - and a building." Exactly! As the events of September 11th so horrily illustrated, you could burn the plant to the ground, but as long as you have a repository of your critical business information, you can resume business anywhere. How we view and deal with our intangible assets may be the one thing that determines whether a company survives or not. I think all managers everywhere should read this book.

to the point, easy to read

I am a college student reading this book to supplement my understanding of intangible assets. I tried to read "Goodwill in Accounting" by Hugh Hughes and...that book will put you into a coma. This book is very concise, doesn't use a lot of needless jargon, and has only about 97 pages worth of actual reading. I recommend it!

Black Male Frames is an impressive study of how the institution of slavery poisoned American thinking and created stereotypes about black people, especially black men, which have endured down to the present. In addition, recognizing the interest of scholars in contemporary domestic services, she devotes one chapter to comparing "Bridget’s" experience to that of other ethnic women over time in domestic service in America.

Margaret Lynch-Brennan recently retired from the New York State Education Department where she worked on issues related to civil rights, education reform, and professional development. She holds a Ph.D. in American history from SUNY Albany and has taught in SUNY Oneonta’s Cooperstown Graduate Program.

Letters Illustrate Irish Women's Domestic Service

Margaret Lynch-Brennan, a woman of Irish descent, researched Irish immigrant women who worked as domestics in the northeast United States. Using letters written by the women servants, she compared images of life in Ireland during the famine with life for these women after they gained employment in their US employers' homes.

In addition to photographs of these women in their youth, the text illustrates their stories. Many came to work at the ages of 12-14 and often stayed with the same family for years. Their history comes alive as Lynch-Brennan shows them through their own words gleaned from their many letters to each other and to family in Ireland. But even though they had to live in attics or cellars, work long hours, and entertain their guests in the kitchen, these Irish women maintained a strongly optimistic attitude and even became defiant if their employers asked too much of them.

Many experienced religious discrimination as their employers did not appreciate employing Catholics who wanted to take time off to go to church. But the Irish Bridgets maintained their staunch independence by attending church, going to dances to see their friends and relatives, and writing the letters that inspired this book.

I loved this book.My grandmother was a domestic in NYC for 4 years after she landed at Ellis Island. I could envision her world at that time while reading the chapters.

Well Written. Well Researched.

My grandmother emigrated from country Mayo to the UK, then sold her mother's linens to book passage from Liverpool to New York. She came to the US to work in domestic service. This book helps put her experience in perspective as part of a larger wave of emigration, provides some context for the life she left and the life she came to, and traces possible impact of this courageous group of immigrants. Thanks to the author for taking on the topic.

About the Author

Ron Haskins is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a senior consultant at the Annie E. Casey Foundation. A former adviser to the President for welfare policy, he spent 14 years on the staff of the House Ways and Means Human Resources Subcommittee, first as welfare counsel to the Republican staff, then as the subcommittee's staff director. He is the author of Work over Welfare: The Inside Story of the 1996 Welfare Reform Law (Brookings, 2006) and coeditor, with Rebecca Blank, of The New World of Welfare (Brookings, 2002). Fred Wulczyn is a research fellow at the Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago, where he directs the Center for State Foster Care and Adoption Data. He is coauthor of Beyond Common Sense: Child Welfare, Child Well-Being, and the Evidence for Policy Reform (Aldine Transaction, 2005). Mary Bruce Webb directs the Division of Child and Family Development within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She has been the project officer for NSCAW since its inception.

I wish to offer a Chi Megwich to Wendy Makoons Geniusz for her huge effort to bring this material and this de-colonializing methodology into focus. Reading this book is like a visit to an Elders Gathering with attitude! The discussion about making an offering when collecting botanicals is worth is price of the book alone. So many sources; texts, interviews, letters and linages to combine into one fine book. Be sure to read it twice.

Honoring Native Wisdom

I came upon this book while researching Ethnobotany. To be honest, I almost stopped reading after a few pages: it was not what I was looking for.

I was looking for books on the medicinal and magical uses of plants by Natives. Instead, I found a scholarly text attempting to decolonized early ethnobotanical writings. Even so, something kept me from closing the book. I don’t know if it was Geniusz’s clear writings style, her personal experience growing up learning traditional uses, songs, and stories of the plants, or her exhaustive investigation into the colonizer's writings and approaches to recording early Native teachings.

Whatever the reason, Our Knowledge is not Primitive, hooked me. While I did not gain much practical knowledge from Geniusz’s book, I did gain a deeper appreciation for Native Wisdom.

Geniusz is attempting to decolonize early ethnobotanists’ works, while at the same time addressing the bigger issue of colonizing in general. She argues, and I agree, that rather than being subhuman and naïve as many early colonizers saw the Natives, their Wisdom merely reflected a different way of relating with the world: like comparing apples and oranges. One’s not inherently better than the other, they’re just different types of fruit. Although, it could be argued that the results of modern western thought is much more destructive on the Earth than the Native Way. In that regards, the Native Way is better.

Although Geniusz’s book is not high on my suggested reading list, if you have some time, check it out, for there’s definitely a few gems worth knowing. For instance, her efforts at the end of her book on how we might go about decolonizing early Native Plant Teachings as well as how we can proceed from here was very insightful. Very Knowledgeable

This book is a bit academic and stiff in the writing style, but the information and view point is absolutely incredible.
Ms Geniusz comes to us with generations of Native information and gives a real stiff shake to us non-natives who have never thought about the Indian culture in this way.

Excellent read. I recommend it.
