Great advice. Stuff that you can actually apply. It made me reexamine some of my behaviors to be more effective.

I love the fact that the author put in real examples (one success and one failure). It really helps you see how the tactics can be applied and what can happen then they are not.

This book is extremely useful for change practitioners. Jackson has done a great job of simplifying an approach, and ensuring it's not prescriptive. The guide focuses on long term success of change practitioners not just on the first effort, but ongoing change engagements.

Most research has treated stereotypical images of Muslim women's outward manifestations, such as veiling, as passive and oppressivewomen were depicted as different. By approaching widely used sources with different questions and methodologies, and by using new or little-used research (with much primary research), this book redresses these deficiencies. Amira El-Azhary Sonbol and the contributors deconstruct the past and offer fresh new perspectives. Authors revisit and reevaluate scripture and scriptural interpretation; church records involving non-Muslim women of the Arab world; archival court records dating from the present back to the Ottoman period; and the oral and material culture and its written record, including art and architecture, oral history, textbooks, sufi practices, and the politics of dress.

Its a Fair View

The book provides historical background as well as the context to understand Islamic Politics. It begins with how the early Muslims use their faith to shape Islamic Ideology for both state and society. The book also discusses the rise of Islam, the many empires that flourished and as well as declined. Lastly, The book nicely make its way out by talking about the modern fundamentalism. This book doesnt really convince one to take sides or anything like that. It just sheds a perspective on the basic timeline of Islamic Politics. One could grasp a scope on how much the Muslims deviates in modern times against the original Islamic societal principles and why so this happened.

Guardian of the Presidency is an outstanding book, which presents the perspectives of historians, journalists, academics, politicians, friends and family on the late Richard Neustadt. Neustadt's unique combination of practical experience and academic rigor underlies his noteworthy contributions to the study of presidential leadership and leadership generally. The book adds tremendous value in discussing the enduring lessons and implications of Neustadt's work. It's also marked by unmistakable affection for a generous man who educated many and continues to inspire. Guardian of the Presidency will be of particular interest as a new administration takes office in 2008-09.

Guardian of the Presidency: The Legacy of Richard E. Neustadt Richard Neustadt worked with 7 US presidents and his narration of the PBS documentary of the presidency made him familiar to many viewers. He was a well-loved professor at Harvard's Kennedy School of Gov't (which he helped to found) shaping the minds of many of this generation's leaders. The book is written by those who knew him well, from Al Gore to Jonathan Alter, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Arthur Schlesinger and many more. The chapters reveal as much about the lives of the writers and the times we live in. It's politics and the life of those who live and breathe it.

Since 2008, energy and food markets—those most fundamental to human existence—have remained in turmoil. Resource scarcity has had a much bigger global impact in recent years than has been predicted, with ongoing volatility a sign that the world is only part-way through navigating a treacherous transition in the way it uses resources. Scarcity, and perceptions of scarcity, increase political risks, while geopolitical turmoil exacerbates shortages and complicates the search for solutions.

The New Politics of Strategic Resources examines the political dimensions of strategic resource challenges at the domestic and international levels. For better or worse, energy and food markets are shaped by perceptions of national interest and do not behave as traditional market goods. So while markets are an essential part of any response to tighter resource supplies, governments also will play a key role. David Steven, Emily O'Brien, Bruce Jones, and their colleagues discuss what those roles are and what they should be.

The architecture for coordinating multilateral responses to these dynamics has fallen short, raising questions about the effective international management of these issues. Politics impede here too, as the major powers must negotiate political and security trade-offs to cooperate on the design of more robust international regimes and mechanisms for resource security and the provision of global public goods.

This timely volume includes chapters on major powers (United States, India, China) and key suppliers (Russia, Saudi Arabia). The contributors also address thematic topics, such as the interaction between oil and state fragility; the changing political dynamics of climate change; and the politics of resource subsidies.

About the Author

David Steven is a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, where he works with the International Order and Strategy project.

Emily O'Brien was a senior research officer at New York University's Center on International Cooperation (CIC), where she worked on natural resource management, international institutions, and emerging powers; she now works for REDD Associates.

Bruce Jones is a deputy director of the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, where he also directs the International Order and Strategy project; he has past experience with the United Nations, the World Bank and in intergovernmental negotiations on security and transnational threats.

A bit wordy ... but nice book

Great book about resources, it takes you to every major resource country and tells you the pros and the cons, economically a politically, of every player . As it usually happens with books written by too many people the book is too wordy , a bit dense. But it's a great read

Relevant and enjoyable read. You will learn a ton by completing this read and each contributor/author of each research paper/chapter has accreditation to back up their suppositions. Buy it, and read all 14 Chapters. Another great book from the Brookings Press.
