The new gold standard

This is THE book for learning Old Irish, period. Old Irish is a notoriously forbidding language, probably the most difficult of all the older Indo-European languages. Stifter makes it come alive, through his mix of detailed yet clear grammatical explanations, translation exercises, and quirky humor (gotta love those sheep cartoons!) As an Indo-Europeanist, I wish I had had such a textbook when I first studied Old Irish, instead of having to slog my way through Quin's workbook like the last three generations of students ("The hero hit the two birds in the two trees with his sword"...)
Perfect for those interested in Celtic and Indo-European languages or medieval Irish literature!

"Seangoidelc" is a good introduction to the Old Irish language

"Seangoidelc" makes for a good introduction to the Old Irish language for those want to take a peek behind the curtain into linguistic influences on the modern language. Also, there was an excellent section on the even older Continental Celtic roots of the language at the beginning of the book, and in each chapter some etymological information is included, taking the reader back to an earlier form of the language which we call "Primitive Irish," and sometimes the author even takes us back as far as Primitive Indo-European. For those who seek an in-depth knowledge of Old Irish, though, (which, admittedly, I did not) this might not be the easiest book to use to try to attain this goal - keeping in mind that this is even a harder language than modern Irish Gaelic. Otherwise, I think that anyone interested in the field of Goidelic Celtic will appreciate this book.

This is the best book to learn the latest and greatest about Old Irish. However, there are a number of typographical errors throughout the book which can make learning from it challenging without a clarifying authority. Especially in the solutions section in the back, the reader almost has to point out the errors of the master constantly. Lenition is inconsistent in the answers section, or variations occur with no explanation.
Your best bet, but it could vastly improve. I look forward to a newer edition with, hopefully, less typos.
