Academics and activists, most of whom live in the Muslim world, discuss the major issues facing women of the region as they enter the twenty-first century. They demonstrate how the cultural segregation of women, contradictory and conflicting legal codes, and the monopoly on the interpretation of religious texts held by a select group of male theologians, have resulted in domestic and political violence against women and the suppression of their rights. The contributors focus on ways and means of empowering Muslim women to participate in the general socialization process as well as in implementing and evaluating public policy.

Good book yet for the readers who are not inform of Islamic history and how things were for women before Islam it may be hard to understand certain ideas an concepts. Also it is important that the reader acquires some knowledge regarding the cultures of Muslim countries in order for them to understand the difference between religion and culture.

This book provides a wonderful foundation for understanding the cultural norms which allow human rights violations to occur, and the foreign policy implications which allow them to be unnoticed. This book will make you want to change our policies. It enhanced my understanding of the struggles of Muslim women. A definate must read.

An excellant record of the link between faith, and religion and human rights. I would suggest that anyone interested in religious rights, women's rights, and the US foreign policy response to these issues, read this book.
