The Hiding Hand is a myth

The main idea in this book is the "principle of the Hiding Hand," which takes "pride of place" in the book, in Hirschman's own words. For anyone who plans to read the book, I suggest you also read the following article from the peer-reviewed journal World Development, "The Fallacy of Beneficial Ignorance: A Test of Hirschman's Hiding Hand" (free pdf here: http://bit.ly/26oYmdi). You will see that the empirical basis for the Hiding Hand and other ideas in the book – however interesting and spirited – is not only weak, but biased. This calls into question the validity of Hirschman's ideas, as presented in this book.
